Dyson HQ is the heartbeat of Dyson. This vast site is home to over 2,000 people including James himself, who spend their days strategizing, inventing technology and telling the Dyson story to the world. It’s a unique place to work. There’s a Harrier Jump Jet in the car park, a sliced in half mini and many other engineering artefacts spread throughout the building – reminding everyone of the possibilities of great engineering. And from 2016, our HQ will begin doubling its footprint with an ambitious new expansion.
Malmesbury is tucked away in countryside famous for the landmarks of Isambard Brunel, who revolutionised modern engineering. A charming Wiltshire market town doesn’t sound like the sort of place to develop world leading technology, but Dyson has settled in well. Our secluded location helps us to protect our ideas and stay independent–minded. And just down the road are the quaint independent shops, restaurants and pubs frequented by Dyson people – creating a campus–like community in the town. For a more vibrant lifestyle, many people live in the fashionable nearby cities of Bristol and Bath (where a young James Dyson invented cyclone technology).
Onsite, there’s a large café–restaurant, cheffed by Joseph Croan, former head chef of Marco Pierre White’s London restaurant L’Escargot. So everyone eats exceedingly well, at subsidised prices. And for a quiet 15 minutes of reflection (or a nice summer picnic) there’s a Nature Walk around the perimeter.
For such a huge team, the camaraderie and familiarity is remarkable. This is largely due to the plethora of communal areas, company events and monthly Café Briefings covering the latest and greatest international Dyson news. Every year, teams take part in Challenge Dyson – a global engineering challenge that tests skills at building machines out of scraps, then racing them.
But the highlight of the Dyson social calendar is the annual Christmas party, where close to 1,500 people gather (frequently in an aircraft hangar as it’s the only place big enough) to let their hair down and compete in an elaborate, engineering–themed fancy–dress competition.

Research, Design and Development
Our top secret RDD centre is where we invent the technology that solves problems and drives Dyson forward. Our engineers and scientists challenge convention, build, test, fail, refine, fail again. From day one, as part of a 3,000–strong global team, they work on top secret projects in a huge array of state of the art laboratories – from aerodynamics to acoustics, and robotics to microbiology. There are teams covering the whole design process: manufacturing and tooling, research and science, software and mobile apps, motors, new product innovation and testing. As we continue to grow, so do our categories – vacuum cleaners, hand dryers, fans, heaters, humidifiers and air purifiers. And our newest addition: lighting.
Dyson Global occupies an enormous, naturally lit open plan office on the upper and lower levels of Dyson HQ. It’s home to all of our global Commercial, Marketing, Legal, Finance, IT, HR and Operations people – 900 in all. The buzz of business is exhilarating with people on the phone to the US, videoconferencing with Japan, sharing jokes in the kitchens or trying out the latest inventions by their desks. From dawn until well after dusk, it’s alive with Dyson teams and technology.
Dyson Great Britain, Ireland and the Nordics (GB&I&N)
Dyson GB&I&N is big team of 400 people, occupying their own space ‘over the bridge’. However, it has close links with Dyson Global and many people progress into roles within the global side, or vice versa. As Dyson’s most established market, GB&I&N offers unique challenges and the experienced team confronts them head on: developing stronger claims, more targeted marketing and more engaging retail environments to fight off tough competition. Also sharing the building is the UK customer support team, which has won awards for its sterling service and levels of care.
