I graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2012. I was persuaded by a fellow student to attend a talk by Dyson at Nanyang Technological University. It inspired me to take my first engineering career step with Dyson and I applied for a Graduate Design Engineer position in our Singapore Research Development Design (RDD) hub.
Dyson has exceeded my expectations. Before I joined, I knew that it was a global organisation that’s growing quickly and successfully. On the job, given the rapid pace of work and ever-changing environment, you really feel it. Opportunities open up to you if you’re willing to ‘open the door’. It’s up to you to grab those chances and always ask yourself ‘What’s stopping you?’.
At Dyson, it’s not always about fixing one big problem but a series of small ones. For engineers at Dyson solving problems is our job. The opportunity to use the engineering skills that I learned at university is what drew me to Dyson in the first place.
One of my defining moments was successfully gaining a place on the Dyson Global Pioneers programme. This has offered me self-driven career acceleration opportunities, insights into the future of Dyson, and enabled me to build networks internationally. As the launch event drew to a close I was asked to give a 30-second reflection pitch to our Chief Executive, something I would never have expected to do otherwise.
Another moment would have to be a project I ran with a team of engineers, when I’d been at Dyson for about nine months. The idea was to overhaul current ways of working and to introduce new systems and protocols, encouraging good etiquette and improvements. This project was a real catalyst because the management team recognised my abilities and were impressed by the contribution I had made throughout the project. Grabbing these opportunities and working hard means that doors can open for you.
