Dyson is committed to an ambitious future, launching into new technology areas, maintaining market growth and delivering superior performance.  Claims, Standards, Insight and External Affairs provide support to multiple stakeholders and business functions, delivering proof, risk mitigation and formal substantiation of design and business decisions.  As Dyson grows, there is a need to drive a more ambitious claims agenda for global markets with timely and delivery of proof and substantiation.

To support the Claims, Standards and Insights Team in a variety of areas, this role shall include, but not by way of limitation, the following:-

 

  • Lead scientific method development for new and existing claims areas in all Dyson business categories, aiding the delivery of stronger, or new, commercial claims areas/intents;

    • Work with internal research teams, 3rd party contract research organisations, test laboratories, academic laboratories, and approval bodies to develop, perform and accredit new methodologies for Dyson commercial claims;

    • When relevant, attend scientific conferences and symposiums to expand academic contacts and gain details of new and relevant methodologies for use in claim substantiation;

    • Be a technical consultant for the claims team, wider commercial, and legal for claims areas requiring scientific substantiation;

    • Provide scientific advice, where relevant, on the Claims roadmaps;

    • Advise the business on the financial cost of potential scientific substantiation routes for evaluation against the claim’s business case;

    • Work with the External Affairs function to influence standards makers and regulators in the creation of new standards and regulations when required.
  • Responsible for providing the Claims Managers and Legal teams with concise and understandable explanations for scientific methods chosen for claims substantiation, such that they have confidence in the use of the method to defend the claim.

  • Perform data analysis, report writing and presentations where appropriate;

    • Analyse the data from the new methods into brief, digestible information for the claims managers to use in Claims Substantiation Documents (CSDs);

    • Feedback results from new methodologies in appropriate brevity to the Research, RDD and Commercial teams.

  • Review and improve the rigor of current documentation and systems used within the Claims process;

    • Work to harmonise and align the claims process with other interlinked processes across the business.

  • Create a peer-review system for scientific methods and analysis used for claim substantiation;

    • Identify and on-board the peers with relevant expertise for the review system.

  • Create and maintain a claims database documenting historic product claims with links to their substantiation documentation;

    • Mine this database for trends over time to report to the Head of Claims, appropriate Claims Managers, Research and RDD teams.

Accountabilities

There is a need to develop an increasing number of Dyson test methods which are consumer representative and demonstrate our technology to the fullest.  To this end, we seek a scientist with several years’ experience in building robust methods and scientific principles to support our claims:

  • Experienced in analytical techniques with scrupulous attention to detail;

  • Experience in developing systems and databases that capture claim substantiation and keep a record of Dyson product performance claims;

  • Develop claims process and ensure it links with RDD and Commercial processes;

  • Expertise in the area of new methods development to substantiate commercial  claims ambitions;

  • Ability to analyse and summarise consumer, sensory and analytical data to support commercial claims ambitions;

  • Prepare complex technical data in easily understandable formats to diverse audiences and bring clarity to cross functional teams in supporting our claims ambitions;

  • Be scientific expert in developing new test methods that will benefit our product claims for all categories;

  • Work with accreditation bodies and their labs to leverage third party accreditation to our new methods;

  • Self-starter- able to pick things up and happy to explore opportunities without a rigid framework, and prioritise accordingly;
  • Flexible - willing to take on new challenges.  Open minded and not wedded to traditional ways of doing things.  Must be able to nurture relationships with markets and be empathetic to their position whilst promoting best practice/ Dyson policy.
  • A stickler for detail as well as being able to look at the bigger picture.



  • Credible; ability to demonstrate a good level of understanding of engineering processes in order to work with design teams throughout the project development cycle

  • Degree qualified (engineering/ science/ numerate area)

  • Demonstrable practical experience within technical field

  • Postgraduate scientist preferably with PhD qualification and scientific background in consumer, sensory and analytical test methodologies

  • Experience of publishing in peer reviewed journals

  • In-depth knowledge of setting-up/ commissioning scientific experiments/ research both for internal and external testing including knowledge of gauge repeatability and reproducibility (R&R)

  • Good working knowledge of inter-laboratory correlation methods



    Skills

    • Expert knowledge of scientific method development, analysing scientific data to support Global claims.

    • Good knowledge of systems such as SharePoint to enable further development of claims processes.

    • Good numeracy skills and demonstrable ability to analyse data.

    • Resourceful, bright and engaging.  Can devise creative ways to deliver potentially ‘dull’ or ‘complicated’ technical detail to a broad range of customers.

    • Excellent prioritisation skills and being able to say ‘no’ to people in high pressure environments.

    • Excellent organisational and planning skills – able to work with and communicate across all levels of the business.

    • Adaptable – able to hold their own in a wide range of meetings and scenarios.
