Advanced Design Engineer - Production Design

There is a requirement for an Advanced Design Engineer to join the solid state batteries engineering team to develop the detailed specification of production equipment design required to progress current technology established in research through to manufacture. Whilst technical expertise is core to this role, it is able to work collaboratively, driving the program forwards though strategic and objective decision making, as well as sound technical judgement. The role sits within the engineering team which is collectively responsible for delivering robustly designed cells, that are manufactured reliably, efficiently and safely to ensure the success of Energy Storage at Dyson.


• Production process development

o Generation of manufacturing specifications from stakeholder requirements

o Development of novel processes and equipment to drive production line efficiency

o Proactive risk assessment through thorough scrutiny of processes and fixture design

o Understanding of the implications of design decisions; balancing performance, safety, cost and IP

o Detailing of parts and drawings for communication with support teams and external partners

o Presentation of design decisions, prototyping and test results to team and senior management

• Production process improvement

o Rapid process development through smart experiment design

o Calibration of equipment and part assessment using a range of measurement techniques

o Maximise process control through statistical analysis of manufacturing processes

o Constructive and pragmatic approach to problem solving

• Intellectual Property (IP) Generation

o Generation of ideas to create IP, in order to enhance our technologies and maintain our competitive advantage

o Regular communication with IP team to identify promising avenues for development

 • Safety o Responsibility for system and process compliance with internal and external safety standards

o Contribution to a safe working environment through FMEA input and formal risk assessment

• Collaboration and teamwork

o Establish highly collaborative relationships with all teams that interact with the mechanical engineering team



• Degree in a scientific or engineering discipline (2:1 or higher)

• 3-5 years’ experience in an engineering environment, preferably in assembly and manufacturing

• Enthusiasm to work abroad for extended periods, including long-term secondments

• Ability to provide creative solutions to technical problems, implemented in a logical and systematic manner

• A self-starter, possessing a practical and hands-on approach to problem solving

• Excellent organisation skills, with the ability to effectively manage own time and a small team

• 3D CAD modelling experience and knowledge of drawing best-practice

• Ability to deal with dynamic environment where specifications may change frequently

• Highly motivated and driven with confidence to influence senior leaders

• A team player who builds strong relationships and has an appreciation of cultural diversity


• Prior experience in battery, photovoltaic/solar, semiconductor or electronics industries

• Prototyping & development tools: CAD modelling (Siemens NX), Metal-working, DFA, electronics

• Knowledge of latest technologies and industry methods

• Knowledge of materials and associated process tolerances

• Understanding of statistical analysis tools (E.g. Minitab)

• Prior experience of FEA software (E.g. ANSYS)

• Prior experience of Project lifecycle management tools (E.g. Team Center) to store design information
