Description

There is a requirement for a Design Engineer to join the solid state batteries engineering team to develop the detailed specification of production equipment design required to progress current technology established in research through to manufacture. Whilst technical expertise is core to this role, it is able to work collaboratively, driving the program forwards though strategic and objective decision making, as well as sound technical judgement. The role sits within the engineering team which is collectively responsible for delivering robustly designed cells, that are manufactured reliably, efficiently and safely to ensure the success of Energy Storage at Dyson.

Accountabilities

• Production process development

o Generation of equipment and process specifications from stakeholder requirements

o Development of novel processes, equipment and fixtures to drive the design of pilot lines and production facilities

o Proactive risk assessment through thorough scrutiny of processes and equipment design

o Understanding of the wider implications of design decisions, balancing performance metrics, safety, cost, IP

o Detailing of parts and drawings for communication with downstream teams and external partners

o Communication of design decisions, prototyping and test results to team and senior management

• Production process improvement

o Rapid process development through smart experiment design

o Calibration of equipment and assessment of parts using a range of measurement techniques o Maximise process control through statistical analysis of processes and fixture design

o Effective and efficient problem solving

• Intellectual Property (IP) Generation o Generation of ideas to create IP, in order to maintain and enhance the competitive advantage our technology gives us o Regular communication with IP team to identify promising avenues for development

• Safety o Responsibility for developing mechanical systems and processes that comply with external and internal Dyson safety standards

o Contribution to a safe working environment through risk assessment o Contribution to FMEA / dFMEA to continuously improve safety and reliability of our environment/processes

• Collaboration and teamwork o Establish highly collaborative relationships with all teams that interact with the mechanical engineering team

• Continuous improvement of Dyson engineering practices, processes and environment

Skills

Essential:

• Degree in a scientific or engineering discipline (2:1 or higher)

• Strong technical/systems engineering

• 1-2 years’ experience in an engineering environment, preferably downstream/manufacturing

• Excellent organisation skills, with the ability to effectively manage own time

• Creative solutions to technical problems

• Excellent NX CAD skills and knowledge of drawing best-practice

• A practical and hands-on approach • Ability to deal with dynamic environment where specifications may change frequently

• Highly motivated and driven

• Initiative - a self-starter who is able to change direction and scope, in alignment with strategic direction

• Confidence to influence senior leaders

• Pragmatic approach, instinctively making sound value judgments to get the required result • Root cause analysis and problem solving ability

Desirable:

• Prior experience in downstream/manufacturing environments (including Design For Assembly)

• Prior experience in battery, photovoltaic/solar, semiconductor or electronics industries

• Prototyping & development of processes – metal-working, assembly, design (CAD), electronics

• Ability to understand overall concept and contribute to design generation through knowledge of the latest technologies and industry methods.

• Knowledge of materials and associated process tolerances

• Understanding of statistical analysis tools

• Prior experience of FEA software

• Use of Teamcenter to develop and track cell requirements and Bill of Materials (BOM)
