Description

As the Design Manager you will lead a team of engineers/scientists to deliver technically superior products. You will apply functional knowledge and methodologies to resolve complex problems, providing technical leadership to help others resolve problems and ensure solutions follow robust principles and best practice. You will work independently, receiving some direction from “Head of”, and ensuring alignment where necessary with peers

Accountabilities

  • Leads a team to develop products that meet or exceed the technical specification, cost, time, reliability & quality requirements 
  • Delivers through others – leads and motivates the team to achieve outstanding results. Accountable for the performance, development & engagement of their team (direct and indirect reports) 
  • Plans resources & leads recruitment for their team 
  • Ensure the safety and reliability of all Dyson products 
  • May act as the technical lead for their area & is accountable for resolution of complex technical issues 
  • Ensures good collaboration with other teams across RDD 
  • Mentors future senior engineers/scientists directly or by developing and delivering programmes 
  • Understands and drives the product range plan, working closely with stakeholders to ensure seamless technology integration to products
  • Seeks to continuously improve processes & challenge how we can do things differently & better

Skills

  • At least a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Between 5-10 years previous experience designing manufactured products and practical knowledge of 3D CAD 
  • Experience of managing a small team 
  • Sound understanding and knowledge of physical principles 
  • A strong understanding of practical and methodical design development through prototyping, testing and evaluation of results
  • Knowledge and understanding of plastic injection moulding, tooling and other manufacturing methods 
  • A passion for engineering. Able to demonstrate how your ideas have made a difference 
  • Ability to plan ahead, prioritise tasks and coordinate with the work of others. 
  • Excellent communication, problem solving and analytical skills. Self starter - ability to work independently.
