Description

The Head of Technology Development will lead an R&D department consisting of six specialist mechanical engineering teams developing new floorcare and hand dryer products for the global market. The department includes world class Acoustics and Vibration, Fluid Dynamics, Structural Analysis, Separation Systems, Dust Pickup Systems and Commercial Motors specialists who focus on optimising the performance of our NPI products. The role of Head of Technology Development will be technical, varied and interesting as he/she coordinates the teams to develop market-leading mechanical engineering technologies while being an influential part of a highly creative and dynamic R&D department.

Accountabilities

•Lead the Floorcare & Airblade Technology Development department to deliver ambitious product performance specifications

•Focus on developing highly effective and highly engaged teams

•Ensure new technologies are well understood, and robust to the tolerances needed for mass production

•Ensure technology specifications are set appropriately and current performance is well communicated to the business

•Maintain strong links with the design teams and other areas of R&D

•Communicate regularly with our technology teams in the UK to ensure effective knowledge transfer between sites

•Ensure strong links with the Design Managers and Marketing teams so that all engineering targets and test plans are well aligned with their requirements

•Ensure performance focused production controls are appropriate and effective. This will involve working closely with our manufacturing engineers, operations team, and externals suppliers

•Undertake typical R&D departmental management duties such as budgeting, recruitment, performance reviews etc.

•Think strategically to ensure the department is well placed for the future

•Continually develop the teams’ ways of working (tools, processes and techniques)

•Manage all R&D KPIs relating to your team

•Focus on continually developing the engineers in your teams through training and personal development

•Recruit strong new team members whenever necessary


Skills

•A strong degree in any engineering discipline

•At least 7 to 10 years of technical engineering experience in an R&D or related environment

•At least 5 years of people management experience in an R&D environment

•At least 3 years’ experience of leading a large team

•A proven track record of developing highly effective and engaged teams

•Excellent analytical and problem solving ability

•An understanding of statistical techniques and an ability to analyse data to identify trends and patterns

•A working experience of mass production variation and control techniques such as tolerance analysis

•An understanding of the common assembly/manufacturing processes used in modern consumer products

•Excellent organisational skills.

Able to manage multiple tasks, plan ahead and autonomously prioritise tasks

•Excellent verbal and written English communication skills

•Strong interpersonal and team management skills

•Proactive and highly motivated individual – keen to make a difference to Dyson products

•Basic understanding of Dyson products and our core technologies
