Lead Mechanical Engineer- Robotics Research

About the role

We are looking for a Lead Robotic Research Mechanical Engineer to join our Robotics mechatronics team at Dyson. Someone who can strike the balance between theoretical analysis and delivering practical results applied to real world problems and thrives working in a fast evolving, multicultural space. The role will be based at Dyson, working in our state-of-the-art Robotics facilities on Hullavington Airfield, interacting and collaborating daily with a diverse range of sub-teams across the Robotics department. You will be researching anything from deeply optimised structural parts to entire mechatronics systems understanding the relationship of work with the bigger picture. You will follow a model-based design process to evolve an idea into the foundation for a maintainable design. Confidently picking the best tool-set for the job and, this could vary from first principles mathematics approach to FEA and simulation tools to proprietary code where necessary aiming at developing the knowledge (models) together with the experience (design).


  • Read and understand relevant research papers.
  • Analytically investigate, compare and match methods and technologies to requirements.
  • Adapt and optimise the mathematical models of mechanisms and complex electro-mechanical systems to the application.
  • Contribute to the model-based design approach by implementing these models into more complex development workflows.
  • Support the design team with experiments and results evaluation data driven individual with enough naivety to study and experiment with unusual solutions, and enough scepticism to always ask “why should we do this, why this way”?
  • Prepared to take on challenges and open to learn and try new approaches tools and methods.
  • Open to realise that Robotic is (still) a new field and opinions based on prior experience shall be supported by analysis to be effective.

About you

  • Studies in the field of physics, robotics, mechanical engineering or comparable Master’s degree programme.
  • Very strong knowledge of theoretical mechanics, rigid body dynamics, elastic systems, kinematics, materials including plastics and composites.
  • Solid principles of mechanical design.
  • Some understanding unfamiliarity of control engineering and electronics.
  • Experience of using these tools- MATLAB/ Maple/ Scipy/ Simulink/ SIM mechanic/ Ansys/ SIMcentre/ Recurdyn/ NX and any comparable tools.
  • Identify the best solutions for a problem and bring it down to its simplest, most elegant implementation.
