Mechanical Engineer

The successful candidate will be part of a small team responsible for the cleaning performance of all Dyson floorcare products, working on everything from basic accessory tools to autonomous robot vacuums. The role focuses on ‘mid-stage’ product development in the UK, but can include significant involvement in early research and new idea conception, as well as later stage development and production in South East Asia. The successful candidate will be able to apply engineering theory and experimental rigour to optimise designs across multiple performance metrics, as well as clearly communicating their work with stakeholders across the business.


  • Own the cleaning performance of Dyson floorcare products
  • Support the building and testing of prototype machines against performance requirements
  • Use existing test standards or develop new tests methods to measure performance depending on product and market
  • Understand the physical phenomena driving performance metrics by forming hypotheses and methodically testing them
  • Use various measurement equipment (e.g. flow, pressure, current, rotational speed, or vibration sensors) to understand product performance in more detail and for fault diagnosis
  • Prototype and test creative design solutions for improving performance where required
  • Communicate results, findings and design proposals clearly to design engineers and design managers
  • Work with claims and commercial teams to develop a strategy for marketing product performance
Communicate with upstream and downstream project teams to support seamless end-to-end product development


  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related subject
  • Experience using CAD software (e.g. Unigraphics NX), MATLAB, Ansys Fluent, and/or Minitab would be beneficial
  • Ability to clearly communicate with stakeholders across multiple teams
  • Creative and methodical problem solving skills
  • Strong learning agility and a willingness to learn new skills, including statistical tools, simulation and modelling
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a willingness to build and maintain collaborative working relationships
Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritise key activities according to project timescales
