Product Manager

A vital role in the Dyson Automotive commercial team. Working with the Product Manager they are responsible for setting of the strategic product vision within the 1-5 year period of future products and will ensure that product spec set during the Define phase are still valid through to launch with changing market conditions. Articulating the voice of the customer, informing the whole life plan and supporting associated business activities.



The role is responsible for ensuring that product development within the category will achieve success in the market place over the 3-10 year period. Working closely with the category’s commercial team, Programme team, design and engineering, the role is critical in ensuring new products will deliver a strategic solution that will be commercially successful in market. The role is critical in ensuring new products align with the business objectives for the category and exploit gaps in the market place. Product Managers are responsible for ensuring that products are a commercial success in market.

Work alongside the commercial team, programme and engineering to define the 3-10 year vision for the category;

  • Ensure that market insights, research, market sizing, pricing and route to market analysis assist in informing the future product strategy within category.
  • Provide insights into the global market opportunities to help focus research on the right technologies for future products.

  • Work with the commercial team to set the NPD launch sequence over the 3-10 year period.

Within the Define phase of projects lead the definition of specification to be achieved at launch for new products;

  • Work closely with programme and engineering to set the USP and success criteria within the product Vision Spec.
  • Work with Programme team to define the whole life plan.

  • Work closely with the category’s Senior Commercial Manager and Programme team to ensure that our product specification is set at a level which will succeed in the market place.

  • Lead a cross-functional team across Commercial (including claims, insights, finance) to validate product specification and ensure it will succeed in market. Involved in insights trials, product and competitor testing where required.

  • Ensure that the Commercial voice is heard in the definition of spec through milestones and Product Strategy Meetings (e.g. milestones).

Within the Deliver phases of projects ensure that products do not deviate from the specification set;

  • Ensure that products do not deviate from the desired targets. Where required, assess the impact of changes to spec. and what implications the changes may have to launch.
  • Maintain strong relationships with the engineering teams involved in Product Development to ensure that changes and developments are clearly communicated into the Commercial function.

  • Ensure that learnings from the Deliver phase of projects are fed into future NPD and that we learn from past projects to continue to succeed in market.


  • Educated to degree level or equivalent.

  • Experience of automotive specific market analysis is (for example spec adjusted pricing, segment and competitor analysis).

  • Genuinely interested in getting under the skin of how the business operates. Has at least a basic understanding of the core concepts that make for a successful product strategy. Develops thoughtful but pragmatic solutions.
  • Capable of logically de-constructing an issue or problem. Able to handle large data sets and provide quick, timely analysis in keeping with demanding time pressures for projects.

  • Works well with cross functional teams to deliver against priorities. Personable and open style. Engages easily with external and internal colleagues, across different cultures and capabilities. Develops solutions that have the buy in of the relevant business areas.

  • Persistent, confident and skilled to challenge current working assumptions of others. Able to constructively question, present arguments and evidence, and influence others to revise their views.

  • Confident and credible when working with the entire range of people right across the business. Concise and articulate in communicating analysis and evidence, both written and verbally.

  • Will enjoy the challenge, of getting involved in a range of activities as priorities and requirements evolve. Equally happy and capable working independently on analysis or taking a more facilitative/leading role with others when needed.
