The R&D Test Systems Lead will lead the department’s Engineering Support Team, tasked with delivering specialist skills and knowledge to help support all of the varied Technology Teams with their investigations and measurements. This covers expert knowledge in measurements & control technologies and systems; test rig specification, design, assembly, and validation; detailed CAD support for technology prototypes and test rigs; electronic system design and assembly; and high value test and measurement equipment control and maintenance. As an integral part of the Research department it will also be required that the team independently identify and develop new and novel methods of investigating and measuring the wide variety of technologies and principles that Dyson are pursuing. This will require a close working relationship with all of the Research teams, knowledge of their aims and ambitions, and an ability to juggle urgent requirements with long term goals. In addition to managing the team, the successful candidate will also be expected to use their experience to mentor and technically advise the junior team members, and to implement new ideas to help in the continuous improvement of the team’s capability.


  • Work with engineers and team managers across the Research department to support them in the development and assessment of new technology innovations. 
  • Manage a multi-skilled team of specialists to enable the support of a wide range of engineering challenges. 
  • Develop specifications and concepts for new test rigs, and upgrades to existing ones, according to the requirements of the Technology Research teams. 
  • Independently identify and propose areas for improvement in our existing test and measurement systems. 
  • Deliver high quality solutions according to engineering best practices. 
  • Support the wider Research department with high priority/fast response test and prototype requests 
  • Develop the team skillset to support the variety of needs within an ever expanding department. 
  • Present concepts to James Dyson and the Exec. team, when required.


  • Advanced knowledge and proven experience with control and instrumentation electronics, including; PLC controllers and National instruments hardware. 
  • Knowledge and experience in LabVIEW, control & measurement software development 
  • Knowledge and experience in designing and implementing electrical systems for test rigs 
  • Degree qualified (or equivalent) in a relevant Engineering, Software or Science background – BEng, MEng or similar. 
  • A proven track record of the use of the LabVIEW development kit and CAD tools (Preferably NX) in real-wold applications. 
  • Proven ability to work effectively both individually and in a team environment. 
  • Experience managing a multi-disciplined team 
  • Good analytical and problem solving ability, capable of logically assessing options using a variety of methods and statistical tools. 
  • Persistent nature, inquisitive attitude and results driven. 
  • Good organisational skills - able to plan ahead and to prioritise tasks and co-ordinate with the work of others. 
  • Have an understanding of core engineering test procedures and equipment. Able to specify experimental programmes and effectively analyse results, summarise findings and make recommendations. 
  • Good communication and presentation skills. Able to translate and communicate technical information to project/research teams, managers and directors when required.
