Safety Engineer

Quality and Reliability
Singapore - Singapore

To maintain our strong and hard-earned brand name, the Dyson safety team works one step ahead of approvals and compliance requirements to ensure a Dyson product is safe in all situations.  The position of Safety Engineer is independent to both Engineering and the wider Quality function.  The focus is strictly on safety which is not related to other functions such as cost, usability or reliability.  In addition to advice and feedback, the Safety Engineer assesses new designs as they develop and feeds back into the design process.  While the design team own the design, the safety team along with the legal department is responsible for ensuring that this design does not compromise user safety.
New project introduction and early design development is always in the UK.  In these early stages, the Senior Safety Engineer based in UK is responsible for all safety decisions.  At a point when the project is mature enough, the design development is transferred to Singapore where it will progress to production, this happening in Malaysia.  The successful candidate, reporting to the Senior Safety Engineer in the UK, will become the focal point for all matters to do with safety within Singapore and Malaysia.  The Safety Engineer will need to build good relationships with the relevant local Design Managers and the Senior Safety Engineer’s in the UK.
It is envisaged that there will be an initial period of working in the UK in order to learn the risk based approach that the team take towards safety and to understand the processes involved throughout the product development process.

  • Review Dyson Test Method, FRACAS and Problem Reports for safety risk assessment.  Where concerns have been identified, you will be responsible for liaising with the UK Senior Safety Engineers as well as local teams to introduce appropriate safety controls. If a field investigation requires input from Malaysia, the Safety Engineer will be the point of contact and will help drive to gather the required information.
  • Work closely with UK Senior Safety Engineer for product safety review and with local teams on changing the ‘risk’ rating on Problem Reports if required.
  • Where testing is being carried out to mitigate a safety concern, you will need to review both the test methods and the results to ensure that the information is both complete and relevant.
  • Maintain visibility tests that have been requested in order to assess safety line items in the Design FMEA (DFMEA) and Production FMEA (PFMEA).  Understand the test schedule drive for results.  Update the Senior Safety Engineer and the relevant FMEA with changes to schedule.
  • Perform first-cut assessment of late-stage design changes intended to mitigate safety concerns, maintain awareness of implementation plan and chase implementation.
  • Support ad-hoc requests.
  • Stay close to the Design Team, remain aware of any changes to the product/project and escalate any pertinent information to the Senior Safety Engineer.
  • Willingness to travel is required.

  • An Engineer with good experience and a broad understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering.
  • Previous experience with product safety is desirable. Please note this is not similar to HSE.
  • Experience of working with batteries is desirable.
  • Degree qualified or trained.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral at a technical and non-technical level.
  • Familiarity with risk assessment methodologies & test methodologies would be beneficial
  • Candidates must have the ability to work on multiple projects at the same time and highly adaptable to change with little notice.
  • The successful candidate will need to be very strong willed in order to resist potential pressure to meet project deadlines and to maintain safety requirements.
  • A self-starter able to manage their own day to day timetable and respond to changing priorities.
  • Comfortable to talk to a wide range of people, from the production operators to Design Engineers and Managers to effectively resolve safety issues
