Description

There is a requirement for a senior manufacturing engineer to lead the scaling and industrialisation of manufacturing equipment for new and innovative energy storage technologies. This person will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of innovators, all experts in their respective fields, working to advance the technology and manufacturing readiness of energy storage solutions. Their role in this team will be to develop manufacturing equipment from the research phase, through pilot scale manufacture and onwards to serial production.

Accountabilities

• Work with the project team to detail a plan for scale up of manufacturing equipment from research laboratory to serial production. Identify the activities and milestones necessary to prove progression in the maturity of the manufacturing technology.

• Identify and capture the project, product and process parameters and translate these to specify the requirements for manufacturing equipment.

• Engage with vendors of manufacturing equipment and evaluate alternative options for each phase in the scale up of manufacturing. Construct clearly defined and robust arguments for the down-selection of specific manufacturing equipment.

• Work with the project team to negotiate purchase contacts and service agreements for the acquisition of the manufacturing equipment. Support the development of business cases to secure capital funding for the manufacturing equipment.

• Employ manufacturing engineering tools and techniques to develop and optimise chosen technologies such that they meet product and project requirements of cost, quality and delivery.

• Design the layout of manufacturing cells to incorporate the manufacturing equipment and use virtual manufacturing and process simulation tools to validate theoretical calculations of the cell and equipment performance.

• Provide an expert perspective of the manufacturing equipment to inform the development of the manufacturing process, develop the design for manufacture and contribute to value improvement.

• Define clear specifications of manufacturing equipment and identify any requirements and constraints placed on the facility of the equipment.

• Specify instructions for operation and maintenance of equipment and ensure that all risks associated with the equipment have been effectively managed such that they are as low as reasonably practicable.

• Complete the commissioning of manufacturing equipment and ensure that all required certifications and approvals required for the operation of the equipment are secured.

Skills

• Undergraduate or post graduate degree in a scientific or engineering discipline

• Significant experience working in an industrial environment with at least 5 years of experience in manufacturing engineering

• Proven track record of scaling and industrialising manufacturing equipment from laboratory research through to serial production

• Applied knowledge of methodologies for new product introduction and manufacturing technology development

• Experience of tools and techniques for process optimisation, quality engineering, design-for-manufacture and value improvement.

• Familiarity with at least one of the following: electro-chemical processes, thin-film coating, automated assembly.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

• Chartered Engineer or Chartered Scientist

• Experience of process used in the manufacture of secondary batteries

• Familiarity with PLM, CAD, CAM, ERP and MES systems • Experience using virtual manufacturing and process simulation tools
