About the role


An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Mechanical Engineer with a broad mechanical and thermal skill set to join the rapidly growing Battery Pack team within the Technical Research department. The team are pioneering methods of integrating Dyson's own state-of-the-art cell technology, as well as delivering improvements to packs with commercial cells.
  • Deliver robust design solutions from concept to proof of principle, considering DFA/DFM from the outset
  • Support projects through Dyson’s technology readiness process. 
  • Develop 3D CAD and engineering drawings for battery components and assemblies, along with test rigs and assembly fixtures
  • Understand and comply with relevant International Standards
  • Develop innovative and novel concepts with high value IP while considering freedom to operate
  • Seek to develop engineering expertise in order to advise on design, development, material, manufacturing, prototype build and test issues.
  • Develop and mentor others within the wider team
  • Create new, and improve upon existing, best practices and processes within the team
  • As an assembly and component owner, drive the design activities to achieve the best balance between all physical disciplines, liaising with technical experts in Mechanical/Thermal/Cell Design/Power Electronics aspects, as well as the Product teams.
  • Create, own and deliver verification and validation plans for your designs.

About you


Required:
  • Degree in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline (2:1 degree or better) 
  • Experience in some of the following areas: Static mechanical analysis, fatigue analysis, fracture mechanics, thermo-mechanical analysis, impact/shock/vibration, multi-scale-multi-domain modelling, CFD, electrical/thermal FE, reduced order modelling, materials science, welding, data analysis, Matlab/Simulink, DoE
  • Capable of approaching unique and complex technical challenges, finding and defending a clear route through the problem. Knowing when to focus on the details and when to stay at a high level.
  • You bring together mechanical, thermal, electrical and design for manufacture knowledge to form solutions, performing hand calculations to provide initial design direction and confidence in simulation results
  • Able to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal formats
  • High level of knowledge of 3D computer aided design (CAD) software packages, ideally Siemens NX
  • Working knowledge of GD&T
  • Understanding of physical failure methods and approaches to root cause analysis
  • Understanding of design verification approaches and ability to define suitable test methods
  • Able to progress tasks autonomously with little direction
  • Able to multi-task, prioritise activities and plan work effectively to ensure project deadlines are met

Desirable:
  • Experience in the design and development of Lithium ion Battery packs
  • Ability to carry out mechanical and thermal analyses for concept scoping, followed by detailed analyses backed up by validation.
  • Knowledge of power system design, including motors, transmissions and energy storage solutions
  • An appreciation of other engineering disciplines such as cell design, electrochemistry and power electronics.
  • Experience using Siemens NX, ANSYS Workbench and Siemens Teamcenter
  • Experience of any relevant manufacturing process simulation techniques
  • Appreciation of statistics and robust design techniques
  • Appreciation of systems engineering techniques
  • Capable of performing tolerance stack analysis on complex assemblies
  • Knowledge of compliance and electrical insulation scheme considerations, including creepage and clearance distances, flammability ratings etc
  • Practical skills relating to prototyping, assembling and fixturing
  • Capable of performing tolerance stack analysis on complex assemblies
