Senior Technician

About us

Dyson is expanding its capabilities in Thermodynamics which will include the development of new laboratory and experimental facilities. We require a Senior Technician to support the development, commissioning and day to day operation of the lab. The role will also support Engineers in developing and running prototype electromechanical systems to advance Dyson’s research capabilities and demonstrate future products.

About the role

After appropriate training, the Senior Technician should be able to operate all the equipment in the lab, and will also work with the engineering team to define and implement safe and efficient working practices around the equipment and prototype systems. 
  • Define and maintain safe working practices and lab rules 
  • Support the build of fundamental and product representative prototype systems 
  • Working with engineers, schedule and complete equipment maintenance and upgrades 
  • Support engineers in preparing and using the lab equipment 
  • Perform routine testing following investigative test method procedures 
  • Manage record keeping relevant to the laboratory equipment in line with industry best practices 
  • Work to a tight schedule, prioritise workload and deliver on time

About you

  • Education related to Engineering (ITE / Diploma / NVQ)
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a similar field/industry and work environment 
  • Ability to follow detailed test instructions/methods, conducting a wide range of tests using climatic test facilities 
  • Experience working with compressed gasses and/or pressure systems 
  • Experience in electromechanical system assembly and associated best practices 
  • Good verbal and written communication to convey information in an appropriate and concise manner 
  • Ability to train, supervise and mentor junior colleagues would be beneficial 
  • Competence in MS Word and Excel Maintain a positive attitude with the willingness to approach any task, display drive and enthusiasm to succeed 
  • Have a flexible and pro-active attitude being adaptive to changing priorities 
  • Work within the lab in an organised and efficient manner 
  • Knowledge of COSHH and risk assessments 
  • Experience with workshop machinery, manual milling and turning would be desirable 
  • Experience using control and instrumentation software (e.g. Labview) would be an advantage
