Systems Engineer – New Product Innovation

Dyson RDD develop products which are deliberately different and verifiably better than the competition. These solutions are increasingly complex and require closer and closer integration of traditionally separate engineering disciplines. We are introducing systems engineering as a core competency throughout RDD, which all of our engineers can use to some extent to get to grips with that complexity. 

Our systems engineering team helps us to realise this capability. We decompose the problem into digestible chunks: clarifying our products requirements, their functions, behaviour and physical architecture. The breadth of knowledge of our systems engineers, and their depth of knowledge of our technologies, allows them to question the solutions from any team, finding and resolving risks before they become issues. 
System Engineers are recognised as some of our strongest ‘all round’ engineers, leveraging system engineering tools and methods, to bring clarity from ambiguity. They may be allocated full time to our most complex products or they might find themselves looking after a portfolio of products with a common architecture. 
Although our System Engineers do not have line management responsibility, their depth of knowledge of our solution technologies means that they are expected to play an informal technical mentoring role. For similar reasons, they are also expected to drive the troubleshooting of high profile, cross functional and urgent engineering issues.


Requirements Engineering o
  • Elicit and agree the user and business requirements of new Dyson product concepts or product lines. Work with the Design Manager, Project leadership, Research teams and commercial teams to identify and resolve conflicts at an early stage.
  • Work with our upstream product development teams to define a full set of verifiable system requirements for the product or product platform. Facilitate agreement between our upstream innovation teams and downstream development and test teams. 
  • Ensure all system requirements are decomposed into appropriate sub-system and assembly targets. 
  • Derive and maintain trade matrices for tradeable requirements (for example, cost vs performance). 
  • Use a requirements based approach to demonstrate the technical readiness of products at technical reviews. 
System Architecture 
  • Collaborate with our product innovation teams to decompose products and product platforms into physical and functional architectures. 
  • Apportion product level targets amongst sub-systems, managing trade studies where required. 
  • Work with our project management team to ensure all work streams & work packages are identified helping to align the teams through product breakdown and functional breakdown structures 
  • Use MBSE methodologies to translate our desired user experience into technical system behaviour specifications. 
System Integration 
  • Carry out regular reviews with function and subsystem owners to keep on top of design changes that may impact the requirements or architectural decisions. 
  • Develop and maintain a structured product V&V strategy. 
  • Identify technical issues that might “fall between the cracks” of sub-systems, and be willing to contribute to resolution. o Maintain and communicate technical accounts to show where the product is against its targets. 
  • Ensure system level risks are understood, managed and communicated appropriately. 
System Analysis 
  • Own and coordinate multi-domain system simulation models.

  • A good bachelors or master’s degree in either mechanical or electronics disciplines.
