About the role 

This is a fantastic opportunity for an established Acoustician to work within a team of like-minded engineering problem solvers within our Technology Development – Environmental Care and Lighting department.  The successful candidate will apply their skills and experience in acoustics and vibration to provide insight and understanding to the business.  They will carry out experimental and simulation investigations to identify and characterise the key noise sources and transfer paths of our products and provide effective solutions to improve these. 

Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, the Associate Principal Engineer will act as a technical leader, working on projects at all stages of the product life cycle.  They will work cross-functionally, balancing specifications and system performance metrics, collaborating across Technology Development, Design Engineering, Electronics and DDM teams.  Normally working within their area of technical expertise (acoustics and vibration), there is an expectation for someone at this level to embrace challenges in other areas as well. 


  • To technically lead and support the acoustics and vibration function across RDD and the Dyson world 

  • To drive designs forward based on sound engineering knowledge and to ensure correct decisions are taken at all stages of the design process with regards to acoustics and vibration 

  • To carry out experimental and simulation investigations to identify and characterise the key noise sources and transfer paths of our products and provide effective solutions to improve these 

  • To analyse test results, summarise and communicate findings to other members of RDD, including senior managers, directors and James Dyson 

  • To liaise with development teams to ensure an effective transfer of technology into our product range across the Dyson world 

  • To mentor design engineers and junior members of the acoustics team in best practice in terms of noise and vibration implementation in our extensive range of environmental care and new category products 

About you 

  • A first degree in Mechanical Engineering or Acoustics.  Applicants holding post-graduate qualifications are also welcome 

  • Six or more years' experience in an analytical based company or consultancy.  This vacancy would suit someone looking for their second or third position after graduating 

  • Strong technical knowledge of acoustics and vibration theory and its application to real-world problems 

  • A sound understanding of experimental and simulation techniques, particularly with regards to identifying noise sources and transfer paths 

  • Experience of noise and vibration measurement hardware and software for data acquisition 

  • A good working knowledge of MATLAB, Labview, COMSOL and Simscape preferred, but not essential 

  • A relentless curiosity to solve complex problems with a methodical and structured approach 

  • A drive to apply exceptional attention to detail to every aspect of work and produce highly accurate results 

  • A proven ability to work as part of a team or un-supervised to an agreed goal or set of deliverables 

  • An ability to communicate at all levels, from indirect reports to board level, with confidence, accuracy and appropriate detail
