About us
At Dyson, we are passionate about technology, and we rely on exceptional people to create and deliver products to our customers. Due to continued growth, Dyson are looking to appoint an Electroacoustic Engineer to join a growing audio team under the wearables category. You will be key in driving the development of new audio products from initial design through to production.
About the role
The Associate Principle Electroacoustic Engineer role encompasses the specification, design, and testing of electroacoustic systems within the wearable category at Dyson. You will be an integral part of the global multi-disciplinary wearables team aimed at delivering world class innovative audio products, working from early phase development through to manufacture. You will also support upstream work by communicating regularly with the research and new product innovation teams to help drive the development of next generation products.
If the prospect of making a positive tangible impact on millions of people excites you and you enjoy a technical leadership role, this is a great opportunity.
Responsibilities:
Be the primary source of knowledge at Dyson for everything related to electroacoustics and electroacoustic integration including around microphones, drivers, and noise cancelling technologies.
Work with senior product stakeholders within the project leadership teams to define key product and electroacoustic sub-system requirements and specifications.
Lead the development of the electroacoustic systems to meet the project requirements and specifications.
Use simulation tools to predict electroacoustic system behaviour across the full audio band.
Characterise components, sub-systems, and fully integrated product solutions through acoustic measurements.
Work with mechanical, electronic, DSP, and software engineers to develop prototypes and tune and optimise the systems throughout the full development cycle both through simulation and through iterative testing.
Strong acoustic and electrical debugging skills.
Develop acoustic test strategies and methodologies and drive verification and product validation.
Lead design reviews and clearly communicate to senior stakeholders and company owners.
Effectively identify product and system weaknesses, minimising risk throughout the project lifecycle through FMEA analysis, simulation, and early development of key test requirements.
Provide technical coaching to other engineers.
Ability to clearly communicate to non-engineering teams to support commercial activities when necessary.
About you
Experience developing full product, sub-system, and component level requirements and specifications.
B.S. degree in acoustical, mechanical, or electrical/electronics engineering
Extensive industry experience.
Experience in bringing high performing audio products to market.
Experience developing headphone technologies including microphone and driver integration and noise cancellation technologies.
Experience modelling acoustic systems, including through lumped model simulation as well as using FEA packages.
Experience carrying out acoustic measurements using HATS, ear simulators, and acoustic measurement tools, for example from Audio Precision, B&K, G.R.A.S., Listen Inc.
Experience maintaining and developing acoustic test equipment, test methods, and calibration.
Experience working with microphone technologies such as beamforming and noise reduction.
Strong critical listening skills.
Experience tuning system behaviour based on objective and subjective testing.
Good knowledge around psychoacoustics, perceptual testing, and audio quality.
Experience using MATLAB and/or Python to analyse and process data as well as model acoustic systems.
