In the Electronics Systems Research Team, we use technology to find new ways to solve problems others tend to ignore. Many of the technologies found in our products start in our team.
Following the announcement that Dyson are recruiting 2000 staff globally and 900 staff in the southwest of England, we are looking for an Associate Principal Engineer specializing in motor control software to work in the Electronic Systems Research in our research facility in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. The role involves working with our motors team in research and creating embedded software to drive our future generations of motor technologies for a variety of product categories.

About the Role
In Dyson, the Associate Principal role means being a technical leader in a given field, in this case embedded motor control software. The role involves both the creation and reviewing of embedded software. Coaching and mentoring to help develop expertise in the team is also important, as it both develops capabilities in the team and drives towards better quality and structured software. The role also involves working with external companies to help build business relationships to shape external roadmaps for our needs.
You will typically be working within a team of multidisciplinary engineers developing taking new ideas to a prototype level prior to transfer to our development teams.
The role involves:
Working with the different teams in Research, New Product Innovation, and development teams to gain an in depth product understanding, while using your expert knowledge of the latest technologies to create innovative systems and solutions.
Producing high quality, well structured software for embedded platforms, including RTOS and bare metal based systems.
Implementing various control algorithms on embedded systems, along with analysis and optimisation of embedded software.
Contributing to software review activities.
Documenting software requirements and architecture details.
Contributing to review packs and handover discussions for project milestones and update reviews.
Degree (or equivalent)in Computing Science, Electronic and Computer Engineering, or other relevant discipline with industrial experience in a relevant industry.
Proficient in creating and developing embedded software with particular focus on brushless permanent magnet motor control, preferably using ARM Cortex M series devices.
In-depth knowledge of common software design methodologies and embedded software development in C/C++.
Familiar with requirements for real time embedded software applications and demonstrable experience of working within real time constraints.
Knowledge of Linux and FreeRTOS based systems.
Ability to derive and document software requirements from product level requirements, as well as deriving requirements through testing and from standards.
In depth understanding & application of version control systems.
Experience of working in a laboratory environment and use of lab equipment.
Good analytical ability and attention to detail.
Able to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal format.
Ability to adapt or generate imaginative and innovative ideas, in line with core Dyson values.
