Dyson offers a unique opportunity for a talented and experienced Associate Principal Mechanical Engineer in the Technical Research Team, within Dyson’s Research, Design and Development (RDD) department; based in the new Dyson Future Power Systems Laboratory at Newcastle University, U.K.

Dyson products strive to be at the leading edge of technology.  Through unique strategic partnerships with global top universities and leading businesses, we gain foresight of up and coming technologies.  The technical research team aims to exploit this knowledge to design state-of-the-art products allowing us to differentiate our products from the competition and be ahead of the times. The Future Power Systems Lab is a collaboration between Dyson and Newcastle University comprising a mixed team of Dyson and Newcastle research staff with a large cohort of postgraduate researchers. The Lab builds on a longstanding collaboration between these two expert teams to focus on defining the future of Power conversion; creating more compact, efficient, reliable and environmentally sustainable power conversion systems for domestic applications and beyond.

About the role

Reporting to the Lab Operations Manager, you will work closely with both Dyson Research Management staff in Malmesbury and with academic and student collaborators based in the lab at Newcastle University. 
The Associate Principal Mechanical Engineer role will primarily involve:
  • Leading a variety of concurrently running projects with university collaborators.
  • Develop novel mechanical systems, pushing materials and structures to their limits.
  • Interact with senior management and deliver significant input into the Mechanical roadmap and research activities.
  • Liaise with multiple teams at Dyson to gather product requirements and distil these into technical research goals for university collaborators.
  • Identify novel ideas and solutions and proactively pursue their protection.
  • Inspire and mentor early career academic and industry researchers.
  • Involvement in university activities such as workshops, lectures and tutoring.
  • Work independently to manage your own time effectively.

About you

Education and experience:A minimum of a good first degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent, preferably with a rotordynamic bias, together with a demonstrable level of industrial experience in a relevant field. Alternatively, you should have graduated from a relevant post-doctoral degree with a mix of high level practical as well as theoretical knowledge and industrial experience in a relevant field.
Minimum technical knowledge:
  • Expert working knowledge of analytical and computational techniques, including Finite Element Analysis (ideally Ansys) for structural, vibratory, thermal and shock load considerations.
  • Extensive rotating machinery design experience, with a strong understanding of rotordynamic phenomena and assessment techniques. 
  • Understanding of lifing techniques, both from fatigue and fracture mechanics perspectives.
  • Good knowledge of 3D computer aided design (CAD) software packages.
  • Good understanding of statistics and robust design techniques.
  • Sound understanding of materials science. 
  • Appreciation of other engineering disciplines such as aerodynamics, thermodynamics, CFD analysis, electrical and electronic systems and material science.
  • Ability to apply systems engineering principles to translate fundamental business / system requirements into system design definition and sub-system / component requirements. 
  • Strong understanding of technical risk management processes including Functional / Design FMEA.
  • Basic knowledge of GD&T.

  • The ability to take the lead position within the team on a given area with little direction, whilst maintaining a collaborative relationship with fellow team members.
  • Be able to demonstrate sound theoretical knowledge, analytical ability and problem solving skills in engineering.
  • Ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal formats.
  • Ability to adapt or generate imaginative and innovative ideas, in line with core Dyson values.
  • To be able to multi-task and plan effectively when working with a variety of project teams in an often High-pressure, competitive environment in an organised manner.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritise tasks.

  • Model a high standard of documentation and accountability in decision-making and research.
  • Ability to integrate into academic and industrial working environments and act as a mentor to junior engineers in both.
