About us

This is a fantastic opportunity for an established Acoustician to work within a team of like-minded engineering problem solvers within our Research, Design and Development (RDD) function for an exciting new product category. The successful candidate will apply their skills and extensive experience in acoustics and vibration to manage key product specifications. They will carry out experimental investigations and computer simulations to identify and characterize the key noise sources and transfer paths of our products and provide effective solutions to improve these. 

Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, the Associate Principal Engineer will act as a technical leader, working on projects at all stages of the product life cycle. They will work cross-functionally, balancing specifications and system performance metrics, collaborating across Technology Development, Design Engineering, Electronics and DDM teams. Normally working within their area of technical expertise (acoustics and vibration), there is an expectation for someone at this level to embrace challenges in other areas as well. 

About the role

  • To technically lead and support the acoustics and vibration function across RDD projects and the Dyson world via ownership of key product technical specifications, risks and issues pertaining to noise and vibration.
  • To drive product designs forward based on sound engineering knowledge and to ensure correct decisions are taken at all stages of the design process with regards to acoustics and vibration. 
  • To carry out experimental investigations and numerical simulations to identify and characterise the key noise sources and transfer paths of our products and provide effective solutions to improve these. 
  • To analyse test results, summarise and communicate findings to other members of RDD, including senior managers, directors and James Dyson 
  • To liaise with development teams to ensure an effective transfer of technology into our product range across the Dyson world. 
  • To mentor design engineers and junior members of the acoustics team in best practice in terms of noise and vibration management in our extensive range of products. 

About you

  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Acoustics. Applicants holding post-graduate qualifications are also welcome.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a technical analysis/consultant capacity for said function. Experience in a product development environment for consumer electronics would be preferred though not required.
  • Strong technical knowledge of acoustics and vibration theory and its application to real-world problems.
  • A sound understanding of experimental and simulation techniques, particularly with regard to identifying noise sources and transfer paths.
  • Hands-on experience with noise and vibration measurement hardware and software for data acquisition, signal processing and post-processing. Experience with brushless-DC motors and using FEA tools to analyze structure borne sources of noise is a bonus.
  • A good working knowledge of MATLAB, Labview, COMSOL and Simscape preferred but not essential 
  • Results oriented and a clear logical thinker with exceptional attention to detail and proven structured approach to creative problem solving. An ability to take ownership and drive closure of complex problems collaboratively. 
  • A drive to apply exceptional attention to detail to every aspect of work and produce highly accurate results.
  • A proven ability to work as part of a team or un-supervised to an agreed goal or set of deliverables. 
  • An ability to communicate at all levels, from indirect reports to board level, with confidence, accuracy and appropriate detail.
