Associate Principal Systems Engineer

Design and Development
United Kingdom - Malmesbury Office

About us

At Dyson we are encouraged to think differently, challenge convention and be unafraid to make mistakes. We’re creative, collaborative, practical and enthusiastic. But most of all we’re hugely passionate about what we do.

Dyson develop products which are deliberately different and verifiably better than the competition. These solutions are increasingly complex in terms of the hardware and software capabilities. We’re expanding our Systems Engineering team to help us manage that complexity and ultimately get our new ideas to market sooner.

About the role

This is an immediate requirement for a Associate Principal Systems Engineer with experience of microcontroller based embedded systems. The role will require you to take ownership of the systems engineering activities and take a project from design concept through to production.

  • Work closely with multi-disciplinary project teams to scope and define the problem the software and hardware portions of our products are trying to solve.

  • Identify any key technologies and their maturity level.

  • Capture the expected end-user interactions as a set of use cases, identifying both sunny-day and rainy-day scenarios.

  • Use MBSE methods to breakdown the product into a set of functions and behaviours appropriate to the hardware and software and derive the system functional architecture.

  • Generate the electronics system level requirements and manage their linkage both to higher-level product requirements and the flow-down to lower-level subsystem requirements.

  • Identify any potential areas of high complexity requiring further scrutiny and add risks and issues to the register as and when identified.

  • Work collaboratively with the downstream development and test teams throughout the lifecycle to ensure ultimate successful delivery of the project.

About you

  • A good engineering degree (or equivalent) in a related discipline.

  • A solid grasp of MBSE including experience building SysML models using tools like Sparx EA.

  • Practical experience of developing software and/or designing hardware for embedded systems.

  • Understanding of Bluetooth and/or WiFi wireless technology.

  • Experience of working in an Agile environment.

  • Practical, relevant experience in a product development environment performing similar roles.

  • Sound understanding of requirements management and the system design process.

  • Experience of the full engineering lifecycle from requirements capture through to test and integration, and all associated documentation.

  • Flexible and enthusiastic with ability to deliver on schedule.

  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills, with the ability to interact with subject matter experts across a wide range of technical and operational disciplines.

  • Actively builds relationships across functional divides.

  • Can influence stakeholders at all levels of the business.
