About us
At Dyson we are encouraged to think differently, challenge convention and be unafraid to make mistakes. We’re creative, collaborative, practical and enthusiastic.
Dyson offers a unique opportunity for skilled individuals to invent, design and develop market leading products for the global market. By working in our world class research, design and development (RDD) department, these professionals have the opportunity to work alongside leading technical specialists and highly motivated creative people to create products which fulfil our vision of being truly different and better than our competitors.
About us
We are looking for a talented Test Engineer to join our Verification and Test Team at an Associate Principal role, to support the testing and verification of our new floor care products.
Our Associate Principal Engineers are responsible for development of the category verification strategy (looking to the future to see what test methods & test facilities we will need to verify products still in their research stage) as well as supporting/overseeing the technical content of the new tests being developed.
As part of the Verification and Test Team, you will play an integral part in determining how, when, and where we verify and validate innovative technologies and products to ensure designs are robust to real world conditions and perform better than the competition. While our primary function is to verify requirements, at early stages in a project we add value by characterising the performance of prototypes and feeding back data to drive good design.
You will combine a proficient technical background with the ability to thrive in and guide our test community - a progressive, agile, and multi-disciplinary team with expertise spanning mechanical design, electronics hardware, software, and statistics.
You will have oversight of our core test capabilities for our floor care category of products, ensuring the continued ability to support testing for this category by initiating development and improvement projects. You will provide technical direction on complex verification and test activities, and mentorship of more junior engineers. Working alongside our Verification Engineers, you will engage with floor care projects from an early research stage, identifying capability gaps and forecasting the business’ verification needs based on the direction of the floor care category and the new technologies that are emerging.
Some of the testing solutions we introduce will need to be matured for use at scale by our colleagues and counterparts in South-East Asia in order to verify product requirements at the project milestones ahead of production. In this role you’ll be expected to lead and manage complex test method and equipment development projects for installation or adoption both locally and at our global R&D sites.
About you
Have a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, related field, or equivalent experience.
Have people and project management experience and excellent organisational skills: you can plan, prioritize tasks, and co-ordinate the work of others.
Have extensive years of experience in a verification and testing environment.
You are familiar with a systems-engineering approach, functional and non-functional requirements, and defining test cases to verify them.
You have experience with FMEA, contributing to these assessments and using the information to prioritise work.
Have excellent knowledge of statistical techniques in testing, including reliability demonstration, hypothesis testing for differences between sample groups, sample size and test power estimation.
Experience in conducting physical testing, development of test methods, and the use of statistical tools to demonstrate repeatability and reproducibility of tests.
Familiarity with simulation and modelling techniques for requirement verification, and how physical testing can be used to validate models.
Experience using equipment to create automated test set-ups. For example, a test controller and actuators to automate repeat movement, controlled to a set stress or strain; or cycling power or product modes on a prototype product.
Experience with data acquisition equipment, and familiarity with different sensor technologies for a variety of applications (temperature, displacement, force, etc.)
Your communication and presentation skills are exceptional: you can translate and communicate complex technical information to project and research teams, managers, and directors as required.
Familiarity with international test standards for electrical appliances is desirable.
Familiarity or experience with environmental testing (thermal shock, thermal cycling, high humidity storage, etc.) is desirable.
Familiarity or experience with shock, impact, and vibration testing is desirable.
Familiarity with robotic arms for automating complex movements is desirable.
Enthusiasm and confidence to bring a fresh perspective on technical concepts, with detailed application of real engineering.
Finally, yet importantly, you also should be comfortable with a high degree of ambiguity and enjoy the idea of solving problems that have not been solved before.
