The team serve the junction point for the cell physical embodiment against the aspirations of the chemistry system and deliver a solution to meet aspirations of both.

About the role

This role forms the key technical contribution of mathematical modelling for cell development. Utilizing multiphysics-based cell performance simulation to accelerate cell design optimization, analysis and prediction for a smooth transition from development to production.

A successful candidate will have the technical skills to translate research given models and develop these to capture critical mechanism and accelerate solving complex problems.

Reporting initially to the Senior Engineering Manager, subsequently to the Energy Storage Director, the role will encompass object management, deep technical analysis and communications.

Main Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Be a key member of multiphysics-based modelling for comprehensive cell performance simulation at both development and production phases to accelerate cell realization.

  • Support developing robust mathematical models well correlated with physical tests and simulate complex cell behaviours including power, lifetime, safety capturing detailed thermal, electrochemical, mechanical mechanism for effective design optimization based on these analysis and prediction.

  • You will be part of the subject matter expert team for quantitative and qualitative characterisation activity.

  • Contribute to that material structure and composition requirements are met in conjunction with the electrochemistry and cell build commercial claims.  You will help gather information for feedback on improvements.

  • Be a core member of the characterization structure, contribute and support representing ESD within Dyson.

  • Help develop cell characterisation equipment and information for ESD and be part of the team advising the company on risk.

  • Demonstrate clear presentation of technical information and supporting documentation to ensure accurate hand over either to other teams within the UK or Far East. Be confident in data acquisition and processing.

  • Scientific in understanding but engineering in mind-set.

  • Contribute to develop Dyson engineering practices to continuously improve efficiency.

  • Excellent relationship building skills with the ability to build a network of connections both upstream and downstream within Dyson.

About you

Experience / Requirements:

  • Experience and exposure with Python, C, C++ or Java to pre-process, analyse, summarize data and reporting results is a plus.

  • Familiarity with the foundation of thermodynamics, electronic structure methods and electrochemistry is a plus.

  • Experience with the operative system with Linux/UNIX command line, and bash.

  • Knowledge of define database management system MySQL, PostgreSQL.

  • Familiarity with databases, such as MongoDB, Oracle etc is a plus.

  • Strong organisational skills with a methodical and detailed approach.

  • Persistent approach to problem solving and an inquisitive nature.

  • Must demonstrate a passion for working for Dyson.


  • Experience working with secondary cell research or development or production.

  • Has used analytical skills to develop a product/idea/process from concept to technology demonstration.

  • A Materials Scientist/Engineer with experience in the fields of physical and electrochemical characterisation of materials.

  • Appreciation of relevant battery technology or battery products across the industry.

  • When required, travel to other Dyson facilities in Asia/UK for project engineering build support.

Qualifications / Professional Memberships:

  • Educated to Masters Degree level (scientific/engineering based)
