About the role:

The US Communications team drives awareness, interest, excitement, and true understanding of Dyson both internally and externally in the US. This Communications Manager will report to the head of US Communications and be responsible for driving forward our Floorcare and Professional (B2B)

categories.

This includes strategic planning and execution of campaigns including always-on traditional media relations, product launches, thought leadership activities, and more. In addition, you will work collaboratively to plan and support influencer and internal activities relating to your categories with the Internal and Influencer US Communications team leads. You may also be asked to support on strategic projects across our other product categories and corporate activity.

About you:

          Media & Influencer Relations:

  • Work with US Communications team to set media launch strategies for key products, campaigns, and Dyson’s overall reputation
  • Work with US Communications team to create and manage partnerships and campaigns that propel Dyson reputation forward outside of product launches
  • Pitch to media daily and secure regular positive coverage; about James Dyson, Dyson technology, Dyson philosophy, Dyson in America, and the James Dyson Foundation
  • Work with social media, content, and marketing teams and agencies to maximize communications initiatives on channels outside of traditional media
  • Write thorough creative briefs to request support and materials for projects and launches
  • Monitor Dyson’s press coverage and recommend new arenas and angles to stimulate more awareness of Dyson in the US

    Communicate:

  • Work in tandem with the US marketing team and other departments within the US business to support business goals

  • Work with the Group Communications team to inform Dyson’s global PR strategy, contributing experience garnered in the US and maximizing our agency input
  • Be the local expert, spotting trends and sharing opportunities with the global PR team
  • Be an active part of a global network of PR people – share best practices, ideas, etc.

    People/Agency Management:

  • Work with other category leads to manage PR and influencer agencies day-to-day, helping to set KPIs and keep teams on track
  • Lead Floorcare and Professional categories, setting strategy around major initiatives, including product launches, events, etc.

    Fulfill other duties as required:

  • Relish the opportunities to pick up new activities that fall broadly in the purpose of the role
  • Fix things that need fixing
  • Identify problems and find solutions

    Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • 5+ years of experience in PR or Communications
  • 1+ years of experience in leading people preferred

    Skills and Competencies:

  • Strategic thinking: demonstrates ability to take a broad overview of issues and to identify most salient points.  Takes an inventive approach.

  • Analytical skills: Identifies and analyzes key trends, issues, problems and solutions. Reasons logically and accurately with financial and numerical information.  Ensures details are not overlooked.
  • Collaborative: Able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of people both within the US Communications team and other teams across the US and Global business. Works co-operatively with others as part of a team, as opposed to working separately or competitively.
  • Written and oral communication: Is able to present complex information and arguments in a coherent and accessible format to senior management.  Is able to use a variety of oral and written communication presentation techniques to ensure recommendations are considered.
  • Creativity: Demonstrates imagination, creativity and divergent thinking and encourages it in others.  Shows openness to alternative approaches and promotes considered risk taking. Balanced by good judgment in solving problems.
  • Resilience: Manages personal effectiveness by controlling emotions in the face of pressure, setbacks or when dealing with provocative situations. Demonstrates an approach to work that is characterized by commitment, motivation, and energy.
  • Project management skills: At times this role will involve direct project management, at other times, managing the project manager. This person must be able to manage budgets and deadlines – and plan, achieve and evaluate results.
  • Successful media relations experience: An up-to-date understanding of US media (print, broadcast and online) is essential, as is a proven ability to develop and directly pitch stories to journalists.
  • Demonstrate leadership behaviors: Communicate, inspire & challenge, let people do it for themselves, get people to see beyond their teams, think long-term, invent and improve, be passionate.
