About us

At Dyson we are encouraged to think differently, challenge convention and be unafraid to make mistakes. We are proud to be authentic, different and pioneers. We are driven by a desire to solve real problems and improve everyday lives with intuitive solutions that do more but use less. Family owned, we are not restricted by conventional thinking; we explore, discover and learn for ourselves. Never satisfied, we believe everything can always be made better.

About the role

Dyson offers a unique opportunity for a talented Research Engineer to join the Motors and Power Systems Research Team to work on the mechanical design and integration of our Dyson Digital Motors (DDMs). The role is for an engineer early in their career who wishes to learn, invent, design, develop and integrate industry leading high-performance compressor motors and power systems for high volume production for a wide variety of applications. For over fifteen years the team have been pioneers in the industry with high speed / high power density compressor motors that are highly efficient, cost-effective and robust. These motors are conceived in the UK and are manufactured at Dyson’s state-of-the-art facilities in Singapore and the Philippines.

  • Own the delivery of motor components and assemblies which provide market-leading performance and robustly satisfy the design requirements

  • Stretch the boundaries of speed, power density, efficiency and sustainability in electric motor systems in a variety of applications

  • Use systems engineering and engineering design process techniques to efficiently generate and record design concepts and concept-selection rationale, supporting architecture definition and detailed design of new motors

  • Generate creative and technically sound solutions to multi-physical challenges, using your own engineering knowledge and collaborating with technical experts across all physical disciplines

  • Deliver motor components from a “blank sheet” to proof of concept, including prototyping and testing, ensuring design for high-volume manufacture and automated assembly (DFM and DFA)

  • Develop and own the master 3D CAD and engineering drawings/PMI for motor components and assemblies along with assembly fixtures and tooling

  • Develop innovative and novel concepts with high value Intellectual Property (IP)

  • Understand and comply with relevant International Standards

  • Follow best practice and improve upon existing processes within the team where possible

  • Whilst primarily focussed on motors, there is potential scope and exposure within the role for design work for other key enabling technologies of the power system (e.g. heaters) and supporting parallel projects for integration into the consumer product

The successful candidate will be joining a company which has a strong engineering culture that provides:

  • Regular design and engineering sessions with James Dyson and top engineers in the Company

  • Opportunities to work with experienced people in a wide variety of engineering and scientific disciplines to share knowledge and learn from as well as opportunities for mentoring

  • The only University degree integrated with the day-to-day engineering. This provides opportunity to work with bright young students directly on live projects and help create the next generation of engineers

  • A growing list of strategic partnerships that include large university-based research labs integrated in some of the most recognised institutions such as Cambridge, Imperial, Newcastle, Sheffield, Manchester, etc.

  • Strong long-term links with global material, component and equipment manufacturers – great opportunity to design and engineer for high volume automated manufacturing

  • Dedicated Tech Scouting Team – opportunity to stay close to the latest technologies in the market and assess their use for solving real problems

  • Participate in the biggest relevant engineering conferences world-wide. Access to relevant publications

About you

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant engineering or scientific discipline (2:1 or higher)

  • Ability to generate concepts from a blank sheet of paper

  • Sound understanding of physics and ability to work from first principles

  • Capable of performing relevant hand calculations to inform initial design direction and confidence in simulation results

  • Desire to learn and gain understanding of relevant physics outside your own area of expertise, to suggest routes for achieving an optimised balance between different considerations

  • Capable of using 3D computer aided design (CAD) software packages to model components in 3D and draft engineering drawings.

  • Able to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal formats

  • Able to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary project teams

Desirable

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical principles and mechanical design considerations for electromechanical devices; a basic level of industrial experience in this area

  • Awareness of other engineering disciplines such as aerodynamics, thermodynamics, electrical, electronic and electromagnetic systems

  • Awareness of power system design, including motors, transmissions, heaters, power electronics and energy storage solutions

  • Experience of making design calculation tools in MATLAB and Excel.

  • Ability to carry out basic finite element analysis with appreciation of how results can be verified through testing

  • Understanding and appreciation of manufacturing processes and their associated limitations (e.g. moulding, stamping, forming, machining, winding, welding etc)

  • Experience in using any industry-standard manufacturing simulation software, especially for moulding processes

  • Understanding of materials science

  • Experience using Siemens NX, ANSYS Workbench and Siemens Teamcenter

  • Basic understanding of GD&T

  • Awareness of tolerance stack analysis

  • Appreciation of statistics and robust design techniques

  • Confident in building fixtures/jigs for assembly and testing and aware of FRACAS process

  • Practical “hands-on” ability, supporting technicians developing build processes and test rigs

  • Understanding of design verification approaches and ability to define suitable test methods

  • Understanding of physical failure methods and approaches to root cause analysis
