About the role

  • As a Design Engineer in the New Concepts team, you will be paving the way into uncharted territory and creating the new products for the rest of the company to work on, and as such there is usually no rule book to follow and no previously established aims, we have to think on our feet to quickly absorb new information and use that to autonomously make decisions of what to try next.

  • This is what we need you to do:

  • Design Engineers are expected to actively support new product or technology concepts/ideas and identify performance opportunities from a blank sheet of paper.

  • Design, build and invent new ground-breaking electro-mechanical product features

  • Experiment validation, results analysis and confident, clear and concise communication of technical information to peers and stakeholders

  • Support the creation of vision specification and business case for new product concepts

  • Take a proactive approach in the generation of ideas - host brainstorms, gather research, select and present ideas and concepts to senior management

  • Take an active role and responsibility for your area of the project and expertise area

  • Collaborate with research teams to utilise their wealth of technical skills and knowledge to enhance your product performance

  • Challenge & develop Dyson engineering practices to continuously improve technologies/design/product quality

  • Take an active, hands-on role to ensure that all engineering problems are resolved thoroughly

  • Champion great design to produce products that meet all performance and functional criteria

  • Support early stage research to identify opportunity areas and set product specifications

  • Regular design reviews with Design Managers and the Concepts Director

  • Prepare for design reviews with James Dyson and/or Executive, and participate in as required

  • Keep a Design Rationale document or similar up to date showing the detail design process of your designs with good technical justifications

  • Liaise and collaborate with the suppliers to develop innovative, robust and scalable technology platforms

  • Communicate between all design support teams to ensure effectively and timely input

About you

  • A degree in a relevant engineering or science discipline or equivalent.

  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of product design, mechanical engineering or mechatronics.

  • Sound understanding and knowledge of basic physical principles.

  • Knowledge and understanding of common manufacturing processes.

  • A creative and considered approach to problem solving, adhering to clear design processes.

  • An understanding of practical and methodical design development through prototyping and testing.

  • Proven ability to communicate through 2 and 3 dimensional media, e.g. sketching, CAD (NX), model making.

  • Technical and personal credibility to work effectively with other teams in RDD.

  • Ability to plan ahead, prioritise tasks and coordinate with the work of others.

  • Proven communication, problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Self starter - ability to work independently.

  • Good commercial awareness.
