Dyson is a global technology enterprise. We solve the problems others choose to ignore, with surprising new inventions that defy convention and simply work better. We’re growing and our ambition is huge – more categories, more locations, and more people.
Design Engineering is the powerhouse of product creation, and our Design Engineers solve engineering problems, introduce new ideas and add values to our product. We are Dyson people that are encouraged to think differently, challenge convention and be unafraid to make mistakes.
We’re all inventive and hugely passionate about what we do. At our Global Development Centre in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, there are a mixture of design engineers, technical engineers, test engineers, electronic/electrical engineers, hardware & software engineers, prototype engineers, compliance & approval team, material team, graphic and packaging team, and support staff. We work together as one Dyson team to deliver world class product.
About the role
Possess developed level of design engineering expertise and assume responsibility for ensuring the development of robust and manufacturable designs.
Design Engineers tackle complex design problems.
As key team members, you exhibit independent thinking and action, while also demonstrating the ability to escalate issues when necessary.
Have a clear understanding of the problem at hand and specify the design requirements with clear, specific, and measurable objectives.
Robustly plan and prioritize tasks based on risk level, resolution, maturity, and interdependency of tasks. Monitor progress in line with the established plan, and proactively respond or escalate issues when required.
Generate a range of design concepts and systematically evaluating each concept against the design requirements to identify the optimal solution.
Conduct thorough tolerance analysis to identify and quantify the impact of various sources of variability on the design. Ensure the final design can operate with acceptable performance at the production limits of the design parts.
Identify potential risks associated with the design and develop strategies to mitigate or eliminate those risks. Work closely with cross functional team to conduct thorough risk assessments and use risk management tools to evaluate and prioritize risks.
Create detailed design specifications, including Engineering Bill of Materials, 3D models, CAD drawings, and technical specifications.
Continuously improve product quality, reduce costs, increase production throughput, and evaluate potential alternative suppliers or contract manufactures.
Build mock-up or hand prototype to prove concept or design scheme.
Build functional prototypes/rigs to evaluate the feasibility, usability, and functionality of the design.
Collaborate with manufacturing teams to assess and buy off the build process to ensure the design can be efficiently produced while maintaining quality standards.
Design and conduct investigative tests to identify design risks and determine the functional limits.
Collaborate with testing team to evaluate the product’s functionality, reliability, and durability under various conditions.
Collaborate with quality team to gather feedback from potential users to assess the product’s usability, ergonomics, and overall user satisfaction.
Investigate identified problems to uncover underlying causes and recommend appropriate actions to resolve problems and prevent recurrence.
Prepare for design or technical reviews and participate in as required. Present the problem, proposed solution, risks and opportunities with clarity and precision.
Prepare and submit a Change Request for approval by relevant stakeholders if design modifications are necessary.
Review and evaluate supplier documents for part approval or Deviation Request.
Contribute to team, department or functional level change projects as needed, supporting efforts to enhance organizational efficiency or develop new capabilities.
Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that the design is optimized for assembly, manufacturing, and cost.
Degree holder qualified in an Engineering or science discipline, preferably mechanical, electromechanical, and product design.
Minimum 2 years working experience in product design environment – direct involvement in plastic part design, tooling, plastic injection moulding, assembly process, tolerance analysis, statistical process control and knowledge of system design.
DFMEA and PFMEA knowledge and applied experience.
Good communication skill. Fluent in spoken and written English.
Good experience in home appliances product R&D, familiar with product development processes and best practice.
Good working knowledge and highly competent of 3D CAD (preferably Unigraphics) and technical drawing.
Good knowledge of plastic materials and its application
Good knowledge in component manufacturing processes and techniques, plastic injection tooling and moulding & production line management and quality control.
Good understanding of prototyping and product verification testing.
Metal parts design knowledge/practical experience are highly desirable.
Wire harnesses design knowledge/practical experience are highly desirable.
Ability to hand sketch your idea (2D or 3D) are highly desirable.
Strong ability to plan, prioritize and co-ordinate with work of others.
Excellent problem solving and analytical skills, apply statistical analysis in decision making.
You’re driven, confident and ambitious. You take responsibility and accountability and are willing to take on a challenge.
To increase your chances of being short listed please ensure you submit a supporting statement in addition to your CV clearly addressing how you can meet the role as outlined above. Include details of your current and required package.
