About us

The Dyson Institute Engineer will be responsible for development of the engineering knowledge and skills of the undergraduate engineers.  Working closely with Lecturers from The Dyson Institute they will ensure that the workplace element of the course supports and enhances the taught content.

In order to remain connected to engineering delivery (Line managers and projects) it is essential that the Dyson Institute Engineer is able to work on live RDD projects and/or research.  It is envisaged that The Dyson Institute Engineer will spend 1-2 days per week working on live projects within Dyson organised around Institute management duties, though there will be a period of induction and integration with The Dyson Institute team where this may not be possible.

A key part of this role is for the Mechanical Engineer to work with the lecturers to help reinforce the learning from the taught syllabus and apply it on real products. Your role will be to scope out appropriate products/projects/technologies to use in labs or coursework with the additional opportunity to support with the delivery of the academic labs.

The Dyson Institute Mechanical Engineer will work closely with line managers (particularly Mechanical line managers) to identify appropriate ‘Scope of work’ for Undergraduates, manage allocation for new rotations; monitor and maintain undergraduate progress.

You will become an expert in the Degree Apprenticeship to support Undergraduates with their evidence mapping, reviews and End Point Assessment. This will require you to build-up a strong knowledge of the Degree Apprenticeships and provide coaching to the Undergraduates.

This role can be offered as a permanent role or a 12 month secondment.

About the role

  • Lead and support line managers with the development of training and projects that support and apply the learning from the academic course.

  • Assist in the development of interesting and relevant coursework and lab exercises to aid student learning and assessment.

  • Support undergraduates with technical problems they may encounter on their course or within their roles.

  • Support the recruitment team to select the next cohort of students for the Dyson Institute by providing assessment tasks and materials.

  • Manage technical training delivered for the Undergraduates at the beginning of their work placements

  • Hold technical 1 to 1s with the undergraduates to discuss both academic and workplace elements for their personal development. These may be within the Apprenticeship structure or ad-hoc support.

  • Support the development of the undergraduates into the right technical roles and specialisms as they progress at Dyson.

  • Support with the development of policies /process to improve the Workplace experience for the undergraduates and line managers.

About you

  • A good first degree or Masters in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant engineering discipline.

  • Good analytical ability and attention to detail.

  • Ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal format.

  • Ability to adapt or generate imaginative and innovative ideas, in line with core Dyson values.

  • To be able to multi-task and plan effectively when working with a variety of project teams in an often high-pressure, competitive environment.
