Senior Technician (Education) – Electrical-Electronics and Mechanical Engineering –  Dyson Institute

Description

The Dyson Institute is building a world class teaching department, to develop the engineering leaders of the future. Where undergraduate engineers work, study and develop professional skills.

We are searching for a pro-active technician with great technical and organisational skills who is keen to interact with students.  The technician will oversee, organise and maintain the equipment and spaces in our teaching laboratories.  As part of the role you will also provide support to students, academics, and engineers working in the Institute; and you will maintain a safe working environment following health and safety protocols.

Accountabilities

  • Organise and maintain laboratory equipment used in teaching (e.g. oscilloscopes, electrical motors, tensile test machines, flow measuring kits, etc.) ensuring that the equipment is operational as required.
  • Provide technical assistance and advice to staff and students with organisation, preparation, and set-up of laboratory spaces and equipment for the various activities taking place in the Institute (e.g. teaching laboratory, project work, etc.), ensuring the laboratory tidiness, and support planning of activities in such spaces.
  • Ensure that laboratory consumables (e.g. resistors, boards, probes, tensile test specimens, etc.) are in stock as required; and support staff by placing purchase orders of technical equipment or consumables.
  • Ensure that the laboratories are a safe working environment (e.g. arranging electrical safety checks), and promote best health and safety working practices with staff and students.
  • Attend the relevant meetings and communicate with the relevant stakeholders in a professional way.
  • Undertake development activities as required to maintain skills and knowledge relevant to the role; and share knowledge and working practices with others as appropriate.
  • Document and keep relevant records as appropriate to the role and engage in conversations for improvements and sustainable running of the laboratories.

Skills

  • FHEQ Level 4+ Qualification or equivalent professional experience
  • Knowledge and expertise using educational and professional lab equipment
  • Experience and proficiency working in an Electrical-Electronics and/or Mechanical engineering laboratory, desirable in an educational environment
  • Knowledge of Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc. is desirable
  • Thorough and logical approach with attention to detail
  • Proficient with organisational software (e.g. Office),
  • Very good written and verbal communication skills
  • Willing to learn
  • IT skills and confidence with use of software
