Being a pivotal role in the concept to production of a Dyson Designed Cell puts the Development team at the heart of this exciting journey. The Team will translate early concept directions into fully developed, optimised & validated solutions to make at high volume for the next generation of Dyson products.

About the role

This role houses the ownership for Cell Material Characterisation of novel new technologies in Solid state cells. Be the junction point for the cell physical embodiment against the aspirations of the chemistry system and delivering a solution to meet aspirations of both. A successful candidate will have the communication skills to translate technical feedback whilst empowering their own team to fully measure and analyse prototype cells through to production scale. Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, the role will encompass Technical analysis, Project management, Team leadership and Technical communications.

  • Be the owner of the Development Characterization activities for all Dyson Solid state cells ensuring the material requirements are tested for Form, Composition & Function.

  • Develop both physical capability through equipment competence and theoretical understanding to meet all material performance, Safety characteristics and manufacturability metrics for Dyson cells.

  • You will be the subject matter expert and primary point of contact for all characterisation activity, advice, support, training and coaching. This will be enhanced through frequent and effective engagement & communication with the relevant management teams.

  • Ensure all material structure and composition requirements are met in conjunction with the Electrochemistry and cell build teams. Feedback improvements and recommend plans and actions to satisfy the product vision.

  • Develop and manage one or more pillars of the Characterisation team and equipment’s/facility to deliver novel technology into service. Recruit, mentor and support engineers to build capability, solve challenging problems and deliver continuously to the highest safety standard.

  • Be a core member of the ES management structure, contribute and represent ES at a senior level within Dyson and externally. Support the strategy of the function, devise plans, present risks or take opportunities to deliver safe, reliable and cost effective products to market.

  • Understand and anticipate the requirements for future Dyson cells, working with the research teams to drive new specifications and further enhance the next generation of Dyson’s batteries.

  • Own and be accountable for Cell characterisation equipment’s & information for Energy Storage, including any significant recommendations or incidents, and advise the company on risk and a proportionate response.

  • Build and manage relationships with internal departments, external service suppliers, industry bodies within Energy Storage. Develop and manage relationships with University providers to complement skills and equipment needs for all characterisation needs.

  • Demonstrate clear presentation of technical information and supporting documentation to ensure accurate hand over either to other teams within the UK or Far East. Be confident in Data acquisition & processing – Scientific in understanding but engineering in mind-set.

  • Challenge and develop Dyson engineering practices to continuously improve efficiency.

  • Excellent relationship building skills with the ability to build a network of connections both upstream and downstream within Dyson.

About you

  • At least 8 years of experience of leading technical matters within simulation environment and process development of new products

  • Deep knowledge in numerical modelling

  • Strong foundation in fluid mechanics, heat transfer, structural mechanics, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) or mechanics of materials

  • Design and execution of empirical experiments (DOE) to validate simulation models

  • Proficient in using a variety of FEA and CFD software, preferred experience in ANSYS, Abaqus, COMSOL, SimScale or Siemens NX suite of products is highly desirable

  • Ability to demonstrate persistent approach to problem solving and an inquisitive nature

  • Strong presentation skills with ability to communicate with confidence

  • A good team player, highly motivated with can-do attitude

  • Must demonstrate a passion for working for Dyson

Desirable:

  • Appreciation of relevant Battery technology or battery products across the industry

  • A broad understanding of material properties and manufacturing processes related to Battery cell and module technologies

  • Experience in programming/scripting language such as Matlab, Python, C/C++, Java or SQL for engineering analysis

  • Good experience in design for manufacturing (DFM) guidelines and practices

Qualifications / Professional Memberships:

  • Master or PhD degree (scientific/engineering based)
