Dyson launched in the US in 2002, and since then operations have grown exponentially. Our US headquarters is based in Chicago's Fulton Market neighborhood with additional offices located in Aurora, Illinois and Ann Arbor, Michigan. We also have employees working in field sales, our service centers, and in our growing number of Dyson Demo Stores across the country. 

About the role

To lead the Dyson Legal team across the Americas region providing a comprehensive legal service to the Americas business, upholding and advancing the functional agenda and developing capabilities and ways of operating that progress competence in the region. The General Counsel Americas will be a member of the Americas Senior Leadership Team and will work closely with other senior legal members based in other markets on matters relating to the development of the services provided by the legal team around the world.

The position reports to the Chief Legal Counsel (based in the UK), with a dotted line to the Regional President.


ACCOUNTABILITIES 


Regional Lead

  • Strategic partner for all legal services provision for the Americas Region

  • Member of the Leadership Team of this region

  • Act as trusted and valued advisor to Senior Leaders

  • Responsible for day to day management of all legal team members in territory

Commercial Business Partner

  • In conjunction with CLO and global legal team, developing and articulating a clear vision and development plan for the legal function within the Americas business

  • Understand the business priorities and be central to business discussions and decisions

  • Translate external legal advice into commercial business language

  • Establish strong relations with partners internal and external

  • Managing the budget to ensure legal services are provided in a strategically efficient way, meeting the doing more with less ethos

  • Supporting the CLOl to seamlessly match up the priorities for the US business with the priorities of the Group legal strategy.

Leadership & Talent

  • Nurture and develop Legal Team talent and oversee a matrixed team in the areas of Employment, Compliance, Competitor Strategy and Security

  • Create “esprit de corps” through the organisation

  • Identify and champion top talent

  • Develop strategies for succession planning

  • Devise strategies for efficient operation of the legal advice service.

  • Work with direct reports to maximize their potential

Risk Management & Compliance

  • Formulating a Legal Risk Profile for the Americas business and consulting with the Group General Counsel and the President of the Americas Business to agree how to address and mitigate against the risks identified

  • Compilation and delivery of legal action plans for the region

  • Works closely with the Legal Compliance & Ethics Director (including, but not limited to, conducting training and enforcement of the Dyson Code)

Litigation & External Stakeholders

  • Experienced at dealing with courts and regulators in key markets of this region

  • Experience of managing litigation (if has managed IP litigation that is an advantage)

  • Strong commercial risk assessment skills, with a clear understanding of where to draw the line between acceptable risk and behavior that is unacceptable; plus, the strength of character to ensure the business is advised clearly on its obligations and does the right thing

Projects

  • Ensure legal support is provided on key projects through local market legal counsel

  • Represent legal on significant business change projects such as moving from distributor to subsidiary or entering a new market

About you

EXPERIENCE

  • 10+ years legal experience, most recently working in-house required
  • Experience working in the consumer products or technology industry required
  • Will have managed teams of 5 or more employees including in-house lawyers and other legal team members
  • Proven success in a similar sized matrix organization in a similar role - having worked in an organization with an international HQ is an advantage.
  • Commercial legal business partner – with a proven track record of results
  • Experience, gravitas and confidence to deal with all levels of management within the organisation, including at headquarters
  • A leader of people able to energize and build a team to deliver ambitious growth targets while managing some ambiguity
  • Experience in Canada and Mexico is desirable
