About us
Dyson is a global technology enterprise. We solve the problems others choose to ignore, with surprising new inventions that defy convention and simply work better. We’re driven by progress and thrive on the challenge of relentless improvement. We’re growing fast and our ambition is huge – more categories, more locations and more people.
Our scale and rapid growth make Dyson rich in new opportunities. We value new ideas and diverse perspectives, so our people are trusted with real work and responsibility from the outset. You’ll develop fast and have the chance to move into different business areas and regions. And you’ll be part of a global network of like-minded people – a community that supports and learns from each other.
Our Energy Storage Development (ESD) team are responsible for new battery technology that will deliver significantly better performance than conventional battery cells.
About the role
Being a pivotal role in the concept to production of a Dyson Designed Cell puts the Development team at the heart of this exciting journey. The team will translate early concept directions into fully developed, optimised & validated solutions to make at high volume for the next generation of Dyson products.
As a graduate, you will be an integral part of the project and some of your tasks could include:
Characterisation
Investigate our own Lithium Ion Batteries’ (LIBs’) lifetime, so that we know how long they last: Characterization of Dyson Batteries – Shelf-Life Project
Understand how our LIB manufacturing process work, so that we can make it better (optimization and sustainability) and produce great LIBs (high product yield): Online In-Situ Data Collection and Characterization
Cell Application
Cell specification definition based on bottom-up: cell technology R&D and top-down: pack/product aspiration
Development cell prototyping integrating electrochemical, process, mechanical concepts/technologies
Cell verification and validation to give cell test feedback to teams and ensure our final design meets cell specification
Electrochemical
Understand basic electrochemistry and how to interpret the result in theory. This work covers the logic development by problem defining – hypothesis setting - DoE building – result analysis and utilization of the logic into threshold-overcome solution.
Mechanical Design
Develop 3D design of the cell components and ensure the geometric, thermomechanical, electrochemical and process requirements are translated to 2D drawings
Use design risk analysis tools such as dFMEA and Fault Tree Analysis to identify, assess, score and mitigate risk via geometric modifications and the setting of performance requirements
Assess whether the parts meet their specification by developing and implementing test methods to verify & validate the design for performance, safety and reliability
Use tolerance analysis methods and evaluate the risks via build capability measurements to produce high yield, low cost solutions
Process Development
Development of novel Cell technology comes with new and highly challenging manufacturing processes. This role encompasses all the processes required to progress technology established in research through to scaled manufacture
Be the driver of novel process design ensuring the technical requirements are met for Form, Fit & Function form a process perspective – construct design requirements and develop to resolution to ensure a smooth transition to equipment & production teams
Contribute to the development and optimisation of innovative new technologies that can be incorporated into the manufacturing processes to give a performance, cost or environmental advantage.
On top of the technical know-how and passion to learn more, you’ll need to be inquisitive by nature, enthusiastic about technology, creative and tenacious in your approach to problem solving.
Our Graduate Programme
Our graduate programme is designed to help you drive your career at Dyson with a two-year journey to help you grow both personally and professionally. We’ll help you to improve your knowledge and support your future career progression with workshops to give you baseline soft skills in addition to technical training. Our unique experiential journey provides a framework so you can reach your full potential with leadership talks, lunch-and-learns and more. You may have the opportunity to rotate into a variety of teams to support your professional development.
About you
Working at the forefront of technology is tough so standards and expectations are high. On top of the technical know-how and passion to learn more, you’ll need to be inquisitive by nature, enthusiastic about technology, creative and tenacious in your approach to problem solving.
You’ll also need to be:
Working towards or have achieved an Engineering or Science degree
Appreciation of relevant Battery technology or battery products across the industry and willingness to understand how things work in the physical world.
Able to evidence how you have applied your technical knowledge to solve problems, either through your internship, university projects or as part of your co-curricular activities
Graduating by August 2023
Passionate about Dyson and our technology to help us meet our ambitious plans.
A quick learner and an effective communicator – to be able to thrive in Dyson’s fast-paced environment
Appreciation of relevant Battery technology or battery products across the industry.
Good understanding of the fundamentals of Cells for model build and an awareness of the application of Modules and Pack systems
To be eligible you will need to have no more than two years of relevant work experience post-graduation (Phd students are not eligible for our graduate programmes).
For your application to be considered, please upload 1) your detailed resume and 2) transcript (all semesters inclusive) together with your online application.
