Head of Global Portfolio Management

The Head of Agile PMO role will develop and support a learning organization model through mentorship and coaching, encouraging training and continuous improvement throughout. This role embodies and enables an agile culture, fosters Communities of Practice, provides community engagement opportunities, and offers career development guidance

Experience in metric-driven delivery, and lean methodologies, will be required to build the best-in-class delivery assurance required at the enterprise level. As an arm of the overall governance function, the Head of the Agile PMO is responsible for supporting and enabling the organization’s portfolios, products, programs, and structured work efforts. 

Through collaboration with peers, will drive the execution of strategy. Supporting the implementation and management of productivity tools to measurably improve performance. As a leader within the Office of the CIO, this role is not static and will integrate constantly changing dynamics into an evolving enterprise methodology and delivery practice. The role must combine strong delivery and lean process experience, and a proven track record of transforming large scale delivery from traditional methodologies to agile and beyond.

Ensures that the work of the APMO adds value, is relevant to the strategy of the organization, and meets the goals set for the APMO by executive management. They will balance agility with the need for formal risk management approaches through formal processes, whilst applying empirical continuous improvement to meet the control needs of our business and global regulatory partners

Agile Leadership

  • Accountable for the APMO team with two primary focus areas; Enterprise Performance and Lean Governance

  • Evangelizes, among the APMO stakeholders and organizational leadership, a consensus around the strategic vision, associated missions and the role of the APMO to foster a product-oriented culture and mindset

  • Leads the identification and development of APMO roles, team configuration and recruitment appropriate to deliver the agreed-upon APMO goals and objectives

  • Engages senior leadership and business partners to define the APMO mission, goals and operating model, and releases this after senior management approval, in the form of the APMO Mission Statement.

  • Develops and leads the Agile Practice, putting in place the systems, processes and ways of working to sustain a high performing team, where skill development, increased agility, collaboration and improved ways of working are key to success. 

  • Accountable to build and maintain the agile-at-scale competency and talent strategy at the enterprise level with direct oversight of methodology guidelines 

  • Evolve and continually improve the interdependencies between business models and operating practices, integrating waterfall, iterative, and agile delivery models into one, cohesive delivery strategy to best meet the evolving business needs.

  • Accountable for the consistency of Dyson’s operating methodology and associated processes

  • Engage the organization to ensure continual feedback and identify emerging methodology and alignment needs

  • Instill a learning culture to continuously inspect and adapt methodology and efficiency.

Enterprise Performance & Lean Governance

  • Assess enterprise or portfolio performance, using metrics and reporting. Supporting the organizations progression towards a value based operating model.

  • Assures strategic alignment through prioritization, resource capacity management, key result tracking and program management to achieve strategic vision

  • Manages and optimizes the flow of value through the organization

  • Fosters collaboration between teams, product managers, portfolio owners and invested stakeholders

  • Tracks and communicates key organization metrics (project status, financials)

  • Escalates and tracks organization impediments, removing them where possible without causing detriment

  • Facilitate relentless improvement for the PMO organization

  • Applies a pragmatic risk management stance to design and rollout processes and controls to meet technology needs

  • Indirect oversight of product portfolios providing balance between products and other non-agile initiatives

  • Ensure alignment to the cross-departmental roadmaps, create a collective plan to manage dependencies

  • Participate in Portfolio and Program Management process improvement

  • Create a strong focus on measuring the impact of the work being delivered

  • Ensure that the organization has right level of visibility to current and upcoming work

  • Responsible for knowledge management techniques and governance to support continued learning throughout the organization

  • Lead large scale change initiatives to manage interdependencies and provide performance assurance through Lean Governance.

Person specification / Core Competencies

The role requires extensive strategy, technology, people and process experience at a senior level and on a global scale. A visionary with a proven track record in developing best IT organizations.

The candidate should be comfortable undertaking the role as the IT APMO for ‘best practice’ for the Dyson organisation, enjoy getting into the details and leading teams responsible for standards and governance.

We have big ambitions for Dyson and Global IT and leading teams to deliver the unthinkable is core to the role.  The Global IT function continues to need to transform and evolve to deliver our ambitious plans, the successful candidate will need to lead his teams through this effectively.  Previous experience of leading operating model transformation successfully will be critical.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, information systems, business administration or related field with 5 or more years’ experience in an agile environment and active participation in an agile community

  • Certified in either Scrum Alliance Certified Agile Leadership (CAL 2), Scaled Agile Framework Certification (SAFe), Kanban (KCP, AKT, TKP, Kanban-EXP), Certified Coaching experience is a plus – ICF-CPP.

  • Experience with one or more agile or lean methodologies (Lean, Scrum, Kanban, DevOps, FinOps, SAFe)

  • Exceptional leadership skills with the ability to develop and communicate the strategic vision, and inspire and motivate staff

  • A distinctive blend of business, IT, financial and communication skills. 

  • Effective influencing and negotiation skills in an environment where resources are often not in direct control of this role.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain IT concepts and technologies to business leaders, and business concepts to the PMO staff.

  • A strong facilitator with experience engaging teams in a collaborative, distributed environment

  • Listens and supports people in problem identification and decision-making, creating an environment of mutual influence

  • Customer focused and driven, focussed on service and operational excellence

  • Sound commercial understanding, drive and experience of a KPI/Service culture
