The Power Systems Group is a key part of Dyson’s R&D organisation. It is home to 300 talented engineers, scientists and technicians designing & developing high performance motors, battery packs and other high power technologies across Dyson’s product portfolio.
About the role
The Head of Mechanical Engineering – Power Systems will report to the Power Systems Director and lead a diverse department of specialist mechanical engineers based in Malmesbury (UK), Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. The department is responsible for the mechanical design of Power Systems technologies and is home to technical specialists in areas such as aerodynamics, rotor dynamics, thermals, compressor design, acoustics & vibration and data science. The Head of Mechanical Engineering will be accountable for ensuring our innovative technologies meet performance, reliability, cost, size, weight, multi-sourcing, and time targets.
The Head of Mechanical Engineering – Power Systems is a people leader who develops the teams’ capabilities in line with the long-term business needs: recruiting, coaching and developing our people & building the supporting infrastructure within our processes and our toolsets. They will create and explain the department’s long-term vision, including annual goals and objectives. The Head of Mechanical Engineering will make priority decisions, support & enable his/her teams to perform at their best, and ensure they collaborate effectively across the R&D matrix. As the figurehead of an engineering department, they take accountability for the quality and timeliness of their department’s work.

Responsibilities:
Set the vision and direction for the team, including annual goals and objectives.
Accountable for the team’s delivery of work packages to milestone timelines and high levels of quality & technical rigour
Make technical decisions within the department whenever required.
Display strong creativity together with the technical expertise and sound judgement required to lead the team through complex multi-dimensional problems to find the optimum system level design.
Play a key role in the RDD leadership community whilst encouraging collaboration between functions and leading teams with a ‘Dyson’ mindset – being different, authentic and pioneering.
Attract, recruit and retain talent.Manage performance and develop our people.
Provide world-class tools & develop effective processes.Set expectations for good practice.
Manage and prioritise engineering resources to deliver maximum value.
Create a lean and effective organisation. Manage department spend to budget & eliminate waste.
Be an active participant in the Power Systems leadership team, working closely with the other functional leaders, Project and Design Managers to successfully manage the technology portfolio.
About you
Ability to inspire others to deliver the department’s vision & strategy.
Proven people management skills to ensure the successful delivery of performance through others.
Deep mechanical engineering expertise - with breadth that ideally covers the design of complex electro-mechanical systems, high power systems and design for high volume manufacture.
Proven ability to orchestrate work across a number of different projects and platforms simultaneously.
Deep knowledge of Dyson’s product development framework.
Proven ability to work globally - across countries, time zones and cultures.
Strong desire to continuously transform and improve our technologies and methods – advocating virtual engineering methods, enhancing collaboration and striving for design excellence.
Credibility at Exec level with the ability to build broad networks internally and externally. A role model collaborator.
Proven ability to coach, mentor and develop people.
Can manage performance and resolve conflicts.
