Internal Communications Manager

Malmesbury - United Kingdom

We are looking for an exceptional Internal Communications Manager to work in our GB&I market team to advance Dyson’s story and share important updates with Dyson people. The GB&I team oversees front-line operations for Dyson in Great Britain and Ireland, and is largely based in our Malmesbury headquarters but with a significant population serving across the market in remote or itinerant roles across sales, repairs, customer services and creative services.
The role is instrumental in fostering a close community in the team, bringing together those scattered in different locations while also providing a tailored experience for the GB&I team based in Malmesbury. It will achieve this by keeping people on-top of our Blueprint (our annual strategy), sharing stories that bring to life our culture and communicating news, both good and bad.
We cherish the culture and philosophy instilled by James Dyson and our inventive engineers, while constantly tuning our approach for the reality of a complex, rapidly growing, global business.  We need someone who is not afraid to challenge the norm, who can distil a message, and who pulls off the odd magic trick.  You will need to be confident and quick thinking, guiding our most senior leaders and our people through daily challenges, while planning for the future.
You will have energy and enthusiasm for a fast-paced, results-focused culture, and live Dyson’s problem-solving approach. You will have an outstanding understanding of communications channels, events, audiences, and the ability to tell inspiring stories is a given.

  • Reporting to the Senior Communications Manager, GB&I, you will support Dyson’s internal communications programme to inspire our people about Dyson’s technology, philosophy, leadership and performance.
  • You will develop and execute an internal communications plan for the GB&I team – calendar, content and platforms of communication – including intranet updates, newsletters, podcasts, videos, team meetings and events.
  • You will build a strategy for hard-to-reach audiences, including itinerant workers, remote offices, and customer-facing teams, investigating and implementing new channels to reach them effectively.
  • You will provide counsel to leaders on the messaging for broadcast announcements and longer term horizon scanning – helping them share news in a factual, enjoyable way with our GB&I team.
  • You will work closely with the Group Internal Communications team on the delivery of UK-wide initiatives, supporting larger projects while adapting the strategy to include unique aspects for the GB&I market team.
  • You will devise, manage and run a regular calendar of events to engage and inspire GB&I, fostering an identity for the team across sites and including itinerant workers.
  • You will implement and use measurement tools to gain insight on the impact of internal communications.
  • You will undertake a continuous programme of improvement for the team and our key stakeholders.

Skills and competencies:
  • You will demonstrate strong project management skills: with outstanding organisational and planning skills.
  • You will support alignment of your team’s objectives with that of the wider business.
  • You’ll need to build relationships quickly and be able to influence multiple stakeholders to achieve your objectives.
  • You’ll have the utmost discretion and be calm, logical, and confident – comfortable communicating with all levels and able to instil confidence.
  • You will be self-motivated, able to work autonomously: a do-er, reliable, and with excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • You will support and promote your team internally.
ExperienceThe ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years of experience developing and implementing internal communications and employee engagement campaigns, content and events in a large, fast paced organisation. Experience working with remote/itinerant audiences and across a range of channels is preferred. You will have relevant experience managing campaigns and announcements from start to finish and a few war-stories to share.
In addition you will likely have:
  • A Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience engaging across stakeholders and locations, building lasting relationships
  • Ability to influence and engage people up, down, and across the organisation.
This will seem like an impossibly long list but to do all of the above successfully in Dyson, people invariably have the majority of the following personal traits:
  • Understanding and passion for technology, design and engineering.
  • A sense of what makes Dyson and its people tick.
  • Storytelling ability, instinct, brilliant interpersonal skills and commercial understanding.
  • Unafraid to challenge, be challenged, and ask/answer difficult questions.
  • Willingness to admit when they are wrong and accept an alternative strategy.
  • Tenacity and persistence in pursuing answers to problems, comfort with change.
  • A sense of humour, the ability to laugh and enjoy the moment.
  • The utmost discretion: tact and diplomacy when dealing with confidential issues.
  • Fastidious in organisation and an eye for detail.
