About us

At Dyson we are encouraged to think differently, challenge convention and be unafraid to make mistakes. We’re creative, collaborative, practical and enthusiastic.

Dyson offers a unique opportunity for skilled individuals to invent, design and develop market leading products for the global market. By working in our world class research, design and development (RDD) department, these professionals have the opportunity to work alongside leading technical specialists and highly motivated creative people to create products which fulfil our vision of being truly different and better than our competitors.

About the role

Dyson’s interest in researching and developing energy storage technologies started more than a decade ago, when it became apparent that the full potential of our DDM motors were starting to be held back by commercially available batteries. Fast-forward to 2023, and we now have over 100 scientists and engineers working on battery R&D across our labs in the UK and Singapore.

With multiple generations of Dyson battery technologies ranging from early research through the industrialisation phase, Dyson are recruiting a wide range of roles across their UK and Singapore labs to accelerate progress. These roles include materials scientists, electrochemists, cell design engineers, cell test technicians, cell assembly technicians, mechanical design engineers, manufacturing process development engineers and manufacturing technologists. We are recruiting at all levels of seniority up to senior technical leadership roles.

Key Responsibilities of the role

  • Gain a clear understanding of Dyson’s Energy Storage Requirements and apply your knowledge to lead the evaluation of energy storage technology. Quickly learn and adapt to a fast paced project.

  • Work with the wider characterisation team and lead the applications team to understand the cell testing requirements for each Dyson product – develop any new tests required, including validating tests using conventional commercial cells.

  • Carry out testing of Dyson cells and commercial cells. Analyse and report data to allow clear and meaningful conclusions to be drawn, at a product level.

About you

  • Relevant degree (physical sciences / engineering).

  • Clear evidence of a strong background in research, this may be a PhD, but equivalent industry experience is equally valued.

  • Testing experience, including developing methods for testing electrical, mechanical or safety aspects.

  • Experience in documenting and communicating test methods and results in clear and concise manner, including drawing meaningful conclusions.

  • Cell testing experience, including developing methods for testing mechanical, electrical & safety aspects.

  • Experience with running electrochemical testing equipment e.g. Biologic, Arbin, Maccor.

  • Experience of working with minimal direct supervision.

  • Experience working with cell supplier to diagnose issues and improve product performance through changes to cell design / manufacturing processes.

  • Experience processing data using scripting languages (Matlab/Python).

  • Teamwork. Team player, both in operating within the immediate team, the global energy storage team, and the broader Dyson team.

  • Flexibility. Able to adapt to the constantly changing environment that is inherent in this disruptive technology driven company.

  • Process driven approach. Implements and maintains effective and efficient processes.

  • Resilience. Responds to change and adversity positively. Seeks opportunity in situations which may initially seem negative.

  • Accuracy, and objectivity in communication and reporting. It is important that we don’t over-sell or under-sell achievements, to facilitate good decision making.

  • Commitment and ownership. Dyson is a family owned business, which makes long term commitments to stretching technology challenges. The strongest candidates will want to be on this journey with Dyson, rather than just doing a job.
