About us
Dyson is a global technology enterprise. We solve the problems others choose to ignore, with surprising new inventions that defy convention and simply work better. We’re driven by progress and thrive on the challenge of relentless improvement. We’re growing fast and our ambition is huge – more categories, more locations and more people.
We push the boundaries of what others have defined as possible. Our engineering approach starts with different thinking. Then we continuously refine our ideas – unwilling to compromise and driven by an obsession for finding a better way. Today we employ more than 5,800 people around the world in software engineering, mechanical engineering and science-related roles.
Our Energy Storage team is responsible for new battery technology that will deliver significantly better performance than conventional battery cells.
About the role
The main role of Lead Engineer is to provide technical leadership and support in line with the business direction for the new proprietary process of Li-Ion Battery Assembly Process. The Lead Engineer will work together with RDD (Research, Design and Development) to scale up from existing pilot prototype lines into fully automated production lines to mass produce high volume battery assembly.
Candidate for this role is expected to work closely with RDD, Operations, Procurement, Finance and our key equipment suppliers ensuring new Equipment/Product/Process are successfully setup and have sufficient margin with capability of being produced in high volume manufacturing environment at the targeted cost and within planned timeframe.
The identified candidate will help to maximize design flexibility, increase manufacturing capability and lower production costs at early stages of the project. They will also be expected to identify future opportunities/benefits to feed towards value driven manufacturing roadmaps for execution into manufacturing operations.
Accountabilities & key responsibilities in the following:
As the Lead Engineer, this position acts as the owner of specific process and equipment scopes leading to the overall industrialization of Solid-State-Battery Core Technology in volume manufacturing sites.
Provide technical and cross-team leadership on Manufacturing process solutions, equipment design and development with suppliers based on product requirements established jointly with Research, RDD and Process Engineering.
Deliver manufacturing equipment solutions meeting project timelines per milestone process, including meeting specific targets on cycle time, yield, capacity, while maintaining quality and safety standards.
Interface with Research and RDD in early product development phase to enhance new product transition process, by providing design review focusing on Design for Manufacturing/Assembly (DFM/DFA), offering high volume manufacturing options, and executing feasibility testing with suppliers.
Document manufacturing process and equipment requirements in Technical Equipment Specification (TES) and conduct equipment design reviews, Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), Site Acceptance Test (SAT) in support of project milestones and prototype build delivery.
Ensure smooth daily operation of production equipment, meeting manufacturing targets on Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and Equipment Cost of Ownership (COO).
Establish and lead equipment specifications, troubleshooting, PM procedures and continuous improvement activities and ensure their compliance with corporate & regulatory requirements.
Drive the design and execution of manufacturing tooling, jigs and fixtures with manufacturing and suppliers.
About you
Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in mechanical, electrical, materials, chemical engineering or other relevant fields.
5+ years of experience in battery assembly manufacturing, or other relevant industries like semiconductor, solar panel, or flat panel display manufacturing.
5+ years of exposure in high volume manufacturing organization preferably with high precision automated manufacturing exposure. Sound knowledge of high-end automation design principles for mechanical and control systems (Robotics, Pneumatics, Servo Motor, PLC, HMI and general Mechanical & Electrical Engineering principles).
3+ years of experience in new product transition to manufacturing and industrialization process involving concepts and feasibilities, pilot lines and manufacturing scale up validation testing.
Extensive cross functional project team experience in a fast-paced technology environment, developing novel test methods both electrical and mechanical as well as software.
