Lead Mechanical Design Engineer – Technology Research

About the role
A unique opportunity has arisen for an experienced Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to join the Technology Research team to develop and implement verification strategies for exciting new technologies.
You will work from the earliest stages of projects, working collaboratively with research engineers and verification engineers and to develop new test methods and test capability to support an exciting pipeline of new technology areas in new products.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead investigation of test requirements for research projects, contributing to early development of robust and efficient validation and verification strategies.

  • Lead design and implementation of new test methods & bespoke test equipment, including carrying out measurement system analysis with support from with verification engineers and technicians.

  • Collaborate with research engineers to test new technology concepts and new prototype designs, analyse results using statistical techniques and make recommendations from experimental results.

  • Investigate improvements, diagnosing faults, recommending and implementing remedies.

  • Participate and present in regular design reviews with design managers and director.

About you

  • Degree in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline, and an appreciable level of industrial experience in the design and development of mechanical or mechatronic systems.

  • Proficiency in using 3D CAD software packages, Siemens NX or otherwise.

  • Hands-on experience on test systems design and rig development using CAD. Able to identify suitable mechanical hardware, sensors, actuators, acquisition systems, and integrate them on test systems.

  • Capable of utilizing statistical tools to draw inference from test results

  • Sound theoretical knowledge of basic physical principles, reasoning and problem-solving skills; able to demonstrate clear, logical thought with attention to detail.

  • Proficiency in GD&T.

  • Communication and presentation skills. Able to translate and communicate technical information to project & research teams, managers and directors as required.

  • Able to work collaboratively, cross-functionally and cross-culturally, with stakeholders at all levels

  • Proactive and persistent nature demonstrated by an inquisitive approach.

  • Adaptable, flexible and able to respond to changing requirements and emerging situations.
