Lead Robotics Research Engineer – Perception & Localisation

The role involves the research and development of systems for Dyson’s future autonomous and intelligent products. You will be working in a multi-disciplinary environment within a team of experts that is constantly aiming to improve itself and the world of robotics.

About the role

Dyson seeks applicants who have first-hand experience of applied robotics and a portfolio of robotics projects. We seek people with initiative, creativity, and the ability to learn fast, along with a cross-section of skills that will make a contribution to the company.

As a growing team working at the forefront of robotics research, candidates for all job openings are expected to:
• Be good communicators capable of explaining complex concepts clearly and succinctly
• Work in a tightly coupled, cross-functional and multi-cultural team environment
• Work autonomously under limited supervision to achieve big-picture goals
• Design, implement and evaluate novel solutions to real world problems in robotics, particularly those relating to perception, state estimation and localisation in 3D space
• Implement state-of-the-art algorithms (e.g. from internally developed, open source, and published papers) and perform thorough quantitative evaluation to assess suitability and robustness for Dyson’s future products
• Seek out, understand and resolve the challenging edge cases that arise when operating in real-world domestic environments
• Work within multidisciplinary team to design systems that take into account the physical, computational and cost constraints of the target platform
• Develop software in C++ and Python, and deploy & test on prototype/target hardware
• Provide technical input to Dyson's research strategy for robotics products
• Maintain awareness of developments within autonomous systems, and keep up to date with industry best practices and trends
• Maintain awareness of all internal robotics technology research activities and contribute where appropriate
• Liaise and influence external institutions involved in Dyson's research strategy, such as the Dyson Robot Lab at Imperial College

About you

What you must have:
• Industrial research experience (or PhD) applied to practical perception and localisation problems in robotics
• Experience using a range of SLAM, odometry, sensor fusion and state estimation techniques
• Experience deploying and evaluating algorithms on hardware platforms
• Understanding of a range of different sensors, their combination/fusion, and their limitations
• Understanding of systems design and integration
• Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team
• Be conversant with state of the art perception and localisation technologies
• Strong proficiency in C++ and Python
• Experience developing and deploying software in a Linux environment
• Experience using open-source libraries and packages (e.g. ORB-SLAM, cartographer, g2o, OpenCV, PCL)

• 7+ year applied robotics experience
• Experience with highly articulated mobile robots operating within complex real-world environments
• Experience with Robot Operating System (ROS)
