The Manufacturing Engineering Manager will be responsible for building and leading a team of engineers to define, develop and deliver a manufacturing strategy and manufacturing solutions for Powertrain within our Automotive business. They will work closely with the Senior Management team, the Engineering team and external suppliers to deliver the automotive powertrain to production in an efficient manner, to meet time, cost and specification requirements.


  • Leadership and management of a team of engineers
    • Recruitment and interviewing
    • People and project management
    • People development, coaching and mentoring
  • Manufacturing strategy
    • Develop a manufacturing strategy for powertrain
    • Work closely with the wider Dyson team, external suppliers and consultants to deliver this strategy
  • Oversee and deliver key manufacturing requirements, as follows:
    • DFx work with the design team
    • Manufacturing technology and capability development
    • Manufacturing process and documentation development
    • Virtual manufacturing
    • Specification, purchase and implementation of Manufacturing Systems and equipment


Skills & experience required:
  • Engineering skills and experience:
    • Extensive experience of manufacturing techniques and an ability to explain them and apply them in novel and imaginative ways
    • Broad experience of implementing a variety of manufacturing solutions
    • Experience of working within a NPI/NPD environment, in addition to a manufacturing plant 
    • Ability to drive progress and actions through an analytical and data driven approach 
  • Project and People management skills and experience:
    • Proven track record of leading teams to deliver outstanding results
    • Project management experience, leading and delivering technology projects into production with flawless launch, meeting productivity & quality targets
    • Ability to influence decision makers (both technical and non-technical) in a challenging environment
  • General skills and requirements:
    • Degree level education in an Engineering discipline
    • Extensive experience in relevant engineering roles
    • Self-motivated with the ability to lead, guide and influence others not in their direct line of responsibility
    • Experience of working in an environment where specification and process are not always predetermined
    • Ability to think strategically, develop and lead others in the implementation of a manufacturing strategy.
    • Excellent English oral and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively at all levels within the business

Desirable Skills & Experience:
  • Engineering skills and experience:
    • Set up of a new manufacturing facility
    • Black belt accreditation in Lean Six-Sigma 
    • Manufacturing process research and development
    • Manufacturing equipment design, build and implementation
  • Project and People management skills and experience:
    • Held a position of responsibility within the manufacturing function of a lean, quality driven, class leading organization
    • Ability to evaluate, understand and manage risk (technical, safety, commercial) associated with a project
    • Project management: APM or PMI certifications
  • General skills and experience:
    • Chartered Engineer
    • Product design and development
    • Commercial exposure, especially supplier management
    • Hands-on engineering experience and hobbies
