Dyson’s interest in researching and developing energy storage technologies started more than a decade ago, when it became apparent that the full potential of our DDM motors were starting to be held back by commercially available batteries. Fast-forward to 2021, and we now have over 100 scientists and engineers working on battery R&D across our labs in the UK, US and Singapore. 
With multiple generations of Dyson battery technologies ranging from early research through the industrialisation phase, Dyson are recruiting a wide range of roles across their UK and Singapore labs to accelerate progress. These roles include materials scientists, electrochemists, cell design engineers, cell test technicians, cell assembly technicians, mechanical design engineers, manufacturing process development engineers and manufacturing technologists. We are recruiting at all levels of seniority up to senior technical leadership roles. 

About the role

Dyson requires a skilled and highly motivated Materials Engineer to help it achieve its current and long term battery ambitions and support its RDD lab activities. The person will be expected to spend the majority of their time in a research laboratory supporting the production on new materials for Li ion batteries and optimising the characteristics of the final product. The role will involve handling of large quantities of chemicals and operating reactors and furnaces to prepare new materials as well as developing new ideas. 
Key Responsibilities of the role: 
Reporting to a Lead Engineer, you will join a growing team of chemists, physicists and engineers in Dyson’s Strategy &  Research Group. Your focus will be to understand and investigate the principles which govern the operation of next generation battery systems. You will: 
  • Have the ability to understand what contributes to and effects the energy density of lithium ion batteries
  • Apply your knowledge to understand how cathode materials operate
  • Deliver new materials to act as electrode materials in lithium ion batteries
  • Characterise the behaviour of these materials in cells
  • Interpret these results to generate models of understanding
  • Provide suggestions and guidance of how to find materials with related performance
  • Generate innovative idea with strong & high value IP
  • Work closely with other researchers to ensure that the product performance, reliability and cost expectations are met, within the planned timeline of the project
  • Communicate clearly and effectively the results and project status to a broad spectrum of associated project members and senior management
  • Create plans and manage your own time using planning tools such as Microsoft Project and make sure this is integrated into the overall project plan
  • Write risk assessments and COSHH 
  • Work within an energetic research environment focused on innovation 
  • Be trained and developed to fully understand the R and D process for Li ion batteries 

About you

  • Minimum degree: MSc in Chemistry, Materials or equivalent with a demonstrable level of industrial experience in the design and development of mechanical systems. PhD is a strong +
  • Have experience in the synthesis of cathode materials for lithium ion batteries 
  • Have a deep knowledge of one or several of the following characterisation methodologies: X-ray Diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Electrochemistry, Thermogravimetric analysis, electrochemical online mass spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray fluorescence Spectroscopy
  • Expert knowledge of solid state chemistry
  • Expert knowledge of cathode and anode materials
  • Appreciation of other disciplines such electrochemistry, thermodynamics
  • Ability to specify testing conditions and plan experimental procedure
  • Ability to devise lab based measurement techniques and have a strong command of analysis software and equipment for component and system level characterisation and validation
  • Ability to design and execute material testing, including composite materials
  • Ability to work autonomously, working across teams
  • Good communications skills 
  • Enjoy practical work 
  • The ability to manage personal contribution to a project with guidance from a manager 
  • Good analytical ability and attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal format
  • To be able to multi-task and plan effectively when working with a variety of project teams in an often high-pressure, competitive environment in an organised manner
  • Excellent team working skills
