About the role

Dyson offers a unique opportunity for a talented Research Engineer to work on the mechanical design and integration of our Dyson Digital Motors (DDMs). Joining the Technical Research Team, the successful applicant will be part of the wider Dyson Research Department based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, U.K. The team have been pioneers in the industry with very high speed / high power density compressor motors that are highly efficient, cost-effective and robust for more than 15 years. These motors are conceived in the UK and are manufactured at Dyson’s state-of-the-art facilities in Singapore and Philippines. The team has ambitious growth plans in 2021 in order to deliver an expanding range of high-performance motors into Dyson’s existing and future product categories within the next few years.


  • Own the delivery of motor components which provide market-leading performance and robustly satisfy the design requirements

  • Use systems engineering and engineering design process techniques to efficiently generate and record design concepts and down-selection rationale, supporting architecture definition and detailed design of new motors

  • Generate creative and technically-sound solutions to multi-physical challenges, using your own engineering knowledge and collaborating with technical experts across all physical disciplines

  • Deliver motor components from early concept to proof of principle, ensuring design for manufacture and assembly (DFM and DFA)

  • Develop and own the master 3D CAD and engineering drawings for motor components and assemblies along with assembly fixtures and tooling

  • Develop innovative and novel concepts with high value IP

  • Understand and comply with relevant International Standards

  • Follow best practice and improve upon existing processes within the team where possible

About you

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) or other relevant engineering or scientific discipline with a basic level of industrial experience in the design and development of mechanical and/or electro-mechanical systems

  • Ability to generate concepts from a blank sheet of paper

  • Sound understanding of physics and ability to work from first principles

  • Capable of performing hand calculations to provide initial design direction and confidence in simulation results

  • Desire to learn and gain understanding of relevant physics outside your own area of expertise, in order to suggest routes for achieving an optimised balance between different considerations

  • Capable of using 3D computer aided design (CAD) software packages to model components in 3D and draft engineering drawings.

  • Basic understanding of GD&T

  • Able to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal formats

  • Able to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary project teams


  • Strong knowledge of mechanical principles and mechanical design considerations for electromechanical devices

  • Awareness of other engineering disciplines such as aerodynamics, thermodynamics, electrical, electronic and electromagnetic systems

  • Awareness of power system design, including motors, transmissions and energy storage solutions

  • Ability to carry out basic finite element analysis with appreciation of how results can be verified through testing

  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and their associated limitations (e.g. moulding, stamping, forming, machining, winding, welding etc)

  • Experience in using any industry-standard manufacturing simulation software, especially for moulding processes

  • Understanding of materials science

  • Experience using Siemens NX, ANSYS Workbench and Siemens Teamcenter

  • Awareness of tolerance stack analysis

  • Appreciation of statistics and robust design techniques

  • Confident in building fixtures/jigs for assembly and testing and aware of FRACAS process

  • Practical "hands-on" ability, supporting technicians developing build processes and test rigs

  • Understanding of design verification approaches and ability to define suitable test methods

  • Understanding of physical failure methods and approaches to root cause analysis

  • Experience of making design calculation tools in MATLAB and Excel
