About us
Dyson is a global technology enterprise. We solve the problems others choose to ignore, with surprising new inventions that defy convention and simply work better. We’re driven by progress and thrive on the challenge of relentless improvement. We’re growing fast and our ambition is huge – more categories, more locations, and more people.
Our scale and rapid growth make Dyson rich in new opportunities. We value new ideas and diverse perspectives, so our people are trusted with real work and responsibility from the outset. You’ll develop fast and have the chance to move into different business areas and regions. And you’ll be part of a global network of like-minded people – a community that supports and learns from each other.
Power Systems is a global RDD function that designs and develops Dyson’s internal technologies that enable most of our products. The team has experts in wide range of areas such as electromagnetic, mechanical, electrical, control algorithm, software, and project management.
About the role
We are looking for a Mechanical Engineering Intern to join the Dyson Digital Motor (DDM) mechanical development team, and some of your tasks could include:
DDM mechanical reliability and quality - Responsible for DDM mechanical robustness of mechanical components, sub-assemblies, final assemblies and also related processes from prototype to mass production.
Conduct physical mechanical verifications (motor life test, vibration, impact, environmental…) and other investigations to support project delivery on specifications.
Conduct virtual verifications by using simulation software/tools to predict potential risky areas or failures and also potential improvement before physical prototypes and verifications.
Responsible for FRACAS (Failure Reporting, Analysis and Corrective Action System) – lead/support failure analysis, failure mechanism and root cause identification, and work with other teams (electronics team, operations quality team and engineering team etc) on design change, process improvement, quality control and corrective action implementation.
About you
Working at the forefront of technology is tough so standards and expectations are high. You’ll be contributing to live projects from the start so you’ll need to be curious, hungry to learn and ready to get stuck in. But it’s not just about technical expertise. Our internships are competitive and delivering the next generation of Dyson technology is tough, so you’ll need to:
Studying towards Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
Able to commit for at least 12 weeks and graduating by Q3 2024
Has strong analytical skills, and familiar with engineering software/tools, e.g. ANSYS, for structure / vibration / impact and other virtual verifications by using multi-physics or multi-discipline simulation models.
Has a well-rounded mix of experimental, theoretical and design skills. Use of ad-hoc hand calculations and investigative experiments to evaluate the concepts/ideas and to support engineering solutions/ decisions.
Knowledge and experience of precision machinery design or complex mechanical assembly (such as HDD, brushless motors, turbochargers, turbines, compressors or related) in areas of vibration, noise, rotor balancing/dynamics, thermal and wear/ tear are preferred.
Knowledge and hands-on experience of using Matlab and Labview for signal processing are preferred.
Proven experience of creative and methodical problem solving.
Solid knowledge of mechanical properties, failure mechanisms and processing of engineering materials (such as steel, aluminium, zinc, copper, thermoplastic, thermoset and carbon fibre composite).
Proficient in Six Sigma methodologies and tools (DMAIC/DMADV/MSA/DOE/FMEA etc) and have strong data analysis skills.
Experience on ball bearing quality control and bearing related vibration/noise/reliability analysis and fault diagnosis is a plus.
A strong “can-do” attitude. Demonstrate ability to work proactively and work under pressure.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize key activities according to project deliveries.
Able to work in a self-motivated way as well as in a team.
Good verbal and written communication skills and able to communicate in a professional manner with all levels.
