The Heater technology research team is a mixed skill group of material scientists, mechanical engineers and thermodynamics experts responsible for the early stage design and development of next generation heating and cooling technologies for future Dyson products. We are looking for applicants to join the mechanical engineering wing of our team, working at our world-class research facilities at Dyson’s UK campus.
About the role
As a Mechanical Research Engineer you will work within the heater research team to tackle thermal and mechanical challenges posed by the new technologies we are developing. Your will be responsible for:
Running your own research projects; either supporting the application of technology into future products and/or more fundamental research, developing new concepts and capabilities within the team.
Developing 3D CAD and engineering drawings for mechanical components and assemblies along with test rigs and assembly jigs.
Generating innovative concepts based on scientific theory and then verifying via experimental test and simulation.
The use of analytical techniques, such as Finite Element Analysis, to influence design decisions.
The design, build and test of prototypes, and then the succinct analyse and communication of findings.
Utilising system engineering principles to define, optimise and validate a technologies performance.
Working with design engineering, quality and manufacturing teams to integrate our technologies into products.
Challenging and developing Dyson engineering practices to continuously improve our efficiency and effectiveness
Highly motivated, methodical problem solver and explorer
Practical and methodical design development experience through hands on rig building, prototyping and testing
Capable of logically assessing technologies from first principles using simulation or modelling.
A willing collaborator with a working understanding of Thermodynamic and Material Science principles
Good communication and presentation skills with the ability to communicate complex ideas to different audience.
Comfortable working in a fast pace research environment where the ambition may be to fail fast, and learn quickly.
Willing to work with the ambiguity on early stage research where full technical specifications may not yet be defined
A degree in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline (2:1 degree or better) with a demonstrable level of industrial experience in the design and development of mechanical systems
Good commercial awareness with pragmatic approach to balance cost and value
CAD (preferably Siemens NX)
Programming, preferably Matlab including Simscape and Simulink
Finite Element Analysis, preferably Ansys Workbench
Experience using Control software, such as Labview and Arduino will also be beneficial as would some experience of engineering drawing GD&T
