About the role

The Principal Engineering function (within Technology Development) is a recognised home for our most experienced engineers & subject-matter experts. This role will sit within this group & the successful candidate will be accountable for overseeing & developing the work delivery for the team of world class experts within Technology Development in the specialist area of acoustics and vibration. As well as getting involved with the resolution of some of the most complex technical challenges within our product development, the successful applicant will also be responsible for building & developing the wider team's capabilities within this same specialist discipline. The Principal Engineer is also responsible for providing a supportive, mentoring role to other engineers within the wider team to allow them to flourish & develop within their roles, to the best of their potential.

The ability to collaborate & influence widely across Dyson's other technical teams both locally & globally is key to success in this role, as is monitoring across all our categories the technical maturity of development projects & the escalation of risk when appropriate.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Take a leading role & continually strive to improve & develop the understanding & capability within the specialist area of acoustics & vibration.

  • Immersion & involvement in helping resolve our most complex technical challenges on our development projects & technologies, primarily (but not limited to) their specialist area of acoustics & vibration, whilst continually striving to provide governance & oversight to the development process for the categories & projects where involved.

  • Build, develop & maintain effective, trustworthy, collaborative relationships with other technical teams throughout all phases of the product development cycle.

  • Development & ownership of medium to long-term plans & roadmaps for enhancing team capabilities within the specialist area of acoustics & vibration.

  • Provide support & technical mentorship to other engineers within the wider Technology Development teams, in particular for their area of specialist knowledge.

  • Governance of the quality & timeliness of the engineering output for the specialist area of acoustics & vibration, always ensuring integrity, honesty & transparency.

  • Provide regular top-level assessments of project risk, continuously strive to improve the productivity & effectiveness of our technical input & communicate the maturity of our technical solutions at all relevant managerial levels.

  • Advocate, promote & encourage the use of virtual engineering techniques & methodologies where appropriate to enhance understanding & accelerate the product development process.

About you 

  • Strong technical knowledge of acoustics and vibration theory and its application to real-world problems.

  • Extensive experience in a similar acoustics & vibration role within a technology product development organisation.

  • Masters degree (or higher) in an acoustics/vibration or relevant mechanical engineering  discipline,(with a heavy-bias towards acoustics and vibration subject matter)

  • Expert-level understanding of relevant theoretical, experimental & engineering simulation techniques within the area of acoustics and vibration, particularly with regards to identifying noise sources and transfer paths.

  • Experience of noise and vibration measurement hardware and software for data acquisition.

  • An expert working level knowledge of computer-aided engineering (CAE) software, tools & techniques, preferably ANSYS and/or COMSOL, where appropriate for the areas of acoustics, aero-acoustics & vibration.

  • A solid understanding of systems engineering toolsets & methodologies.

  • Ability to take a leading role in problem-solving & product development.

  • Proven demonstration of coaching & mentoring skills.

  • Excellent influencing & collaboration skills
