We are looking for a Principal Engineer to join the New Product Innovation (NPI) team working on a range of exciting new products as part of a team of world class product designers.

By working in our world class Research Design and Development department, these individuals have the opportunity to work alongside leading technical specialists and highly motivated creative people, to create products which fulfil our ambition of being truly different and better than our competitors.

The Principal Engineer will work closely with the Head of NPI to support the exploration, planning and delivery of exciting new projects. We are seeking a key collaborator and explorer with a wealth of multi-disciplinary experience in innovation and project delivery. The objective will be to ensure sufficient design maturity for transfer to the development team, ready for rapid deployment to market.


  • You will work independently within the team, consulting the project leadership team on key product targets and technical challenges.

  • As a senior member of the team, you will coach and mentor Project Leads and Design Managers, drawing upon your considerable experience.

  • You will take on personal responsibility of key project challenges where required.

  • In collaboration with the Research department, you will help to ensure key work packages are aligned to product vision.

  • Advise on technical maturity and support preparation for early milestones.

  • You will champion cross-functional engagement on new technical challenges and work with the downstream team to ensure seamless transfer.

  • You will champion a culture of failure mode avoidance being a key contributor to FMEAs.

  • Working with the team, you will have an active involvement in assessing and escalating potential intellectual property risks or opportunities.

  • You will be a role model for quality and consistency of delivery, striving to champion the correct processes and help the team to constantly improve the way we deliver.

About you

  • A degree in a relevant engineering or science discipline or equivalent.

  • A “super-generalist” with a breadth of experience from aeroacoustics to mechanical design; thermodynamics to software and electronics.

  • Extensive experience in consumer product design or relevant industry.

  • You will have a keen eye for detail; with experience in resolving significant innovation challenges both on paper and practically.

  • You will have extensive experience in the full product design cycle having played a key role in projects from early concept to start of production.

  • You will be dedicated, dynamic, data driven, numerate and prepared to do what it takes to get the job done

  • You will have the ability to convey complex issues concisely and accurately across all RDD levels up to James Dyson.

  • Emotionally intelligent with a strong ability to build productive working relationships and influence at all levels.

  • You thrive in dynamic environments and navigate change to deliver world class products.

  • Experience in cost engineering a significant advantage.

  • Experience in Design for Assembly, Design for Manufacturing and Robust Design.

  • Experience in a variety of manufacturing technologies an advantage.

  • You will be globally mobile to support short term project activities such as off-site trials, critical reviews, supplier visits and in-market activities.
