About the role

We are looking for a Principal Engineer to join our growing team. The role will involve:

  • Supporting a group of Engineers working across multiple electronics research projects. Acting as a technical resource to assess technology feasibility, review project progress and guide research activities.

  • Providing guidance with simulation and experimental work.

  • Helping to define team processes, tools, and lab setups.

  • Building internal and external business relationships to initiate collaborative research programmes and bring new technologies to life.

  • Providing project direction based on development experience, subject matter expertise and the long-term team strategy.

  • Developing new ideas and technologies into well understood and de-risked products through simulations and practical testing.

  • Reviewing project progress and communicating across the cross functional engineering team and senior business stakeholders.

  • Reviewing relevant articles, papers and patents and meeting with suppliers to keep informed of emerging technologies.

  • Designing, building, and testing demonstration rigs to prove feasibility of new technologies and products.

  • Working with a creative and methodical approach to problem solving.

  • Identify and communicate technical risks and lead improvements in the way we work.

About you

  • Degree or equivalent experience in Electronic Engineering or comparable discipline.

  • More than eight years working experience in a relevant industry or research environment.

  • Deep technical expertise in a relevant technical discipline.

  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Experience in the design and development of power supplies, motor drives, heater drives, battery management or other power electronics designs.

  • Experience in the selection of power electronics components.

  • Schematic capture and PCB design using Altium Designer, Mentor Graphics or other mainstream tools.

  • Experience of C/C++ programming for embedded systems is desirable.

  • Experience of working in consumer electronics desirable

  • Use of Matlab or Python for data acquisition and analysis.

  • Use of SPICE based simulation tools such as Simetrix and LTspice.

  • Experience of working in a laboratory environment. Use of lab equipment to set up experiments and to take precise measurements.

  • Demonstrate strong communication skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to lead a team.

  • Able to communicate complex ideas to a range of experts in different fields.

  • Experience planning and leading work in a multidisciplinary engineering team.

  • Experience in people management, recruitment, and technical leadership whilst defining the long term team growth strategy to support business targets.

  • Able to provide technical direction and participate in cross-team technical reviews.

  • Experience in working on multiple projects concurrently whist ensuring direction is clear and the progress is reported.
