Dyson is a global technology enterprise. We solve the problems others choose to ignore, with surprising new inventions that defy convention and simply work better. We’re growing fast and our ambition is huge – more categories, more locations and more people.
The team is expanding this year to meet demand for current scheduled projects. The principal role is required to provide a level of expertise in relevant fields, ensure good practice is followed during laboratory testing, to drive the generation of new ideas in the right way and to assist in identifying and filing IP.
Dyson offers a unique opportunity for a talented Principal Electronics Engineer specialising in Sensors Systems within the Technical Research team. Candidates with experience in gas, particulate, multispectral or hyperspectral sensing are encouraged to apply
The team is expanding this year to over 40 heads and works across several product categories and is involved a range of technologies including embedded electronics, sensors and software. We work very closely with the New Product Innovation (NPI) teams and deliver technologies into new products during the research phase. A successful candidate will be working to generate new ideas and technologies to enable specific product features, as well as researching into future technologies.
Some of the technology areas the team covers includes vision systems, particulate and gas sensing, microcontroller selection and software for the above, including control algorithm implementation.
About the roleKey responsibilities •Demonstrates designs are robust and viable for use in product through laboratory testing and driving the team to develop simulations to optimise designs.
•Ensuring the team generates suitable test specifications to ensure product reliability, safety and robustness. This includes the development of test environments including simulation, emulation and hardware/test equipment interactions.
•Hardware design review activities (e.g. schematic reviews and pre/post PCB layout reviews).
•Ensure requirements and architecture details are documented by the team.
•Managing technical risks in a project through FMEAs.
•Assist in producing review packs which typically include concept specifications, requirements and specification documentation, risk registers, FMEAs and design guides when needed.
•Researching into new and emerging technologies through visiting conferences, trade shows, meeting suppliers, reading papers and patents
•Identify emerging IP and ensure inventions are submitted to the IP team.
•Developing relevant technology roadmaps and slide packs and presenting to the leadership team.
•Helping to manage laboratories and assist with risk assessments.
•Working with the different sub teams within Technical Research, as well as NPI, other research groups and development teams to gain an in depth product understanding, while using your expert knowledge of the latest technologies to create innovative systems and solutions and solve complex system level problems
Qualifications, skills and behaviours
BEng/MEng degree in Electronic Engineering, BSc/MSc in Physics or other relevant discipline and a demonstrable level of industrial experience in a relevant industry.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate an ability to research, innovate, as well as being a key contributor to strengthening the culture of innovation within the team and wider department.
We are looking for applicants with knowledge of sensors that can be used in a variety of projects and not necessarily in existing categories you would expect from Dyson. Candidates with expertise in gas, particulate, multispectral/hyperspectral sensing, including hardware design or algorithm design, are encouraged to apply.
