About the role

A unique opportunity for an experienced individual to join the Motors and Power Systems Research Team as the Principal Mechanical Engineer. The role is for a senior technical leader who wishes to invent, design and develop industry leading high-performance motors and power systems for high volume production for a wide variety of applications. The team have been pioneers in the industry with high speed / high power density compressor motors that are highly efficient, cost-effective and robust for more than 15 years. These motors are conceived in the UK and are manufactured at Dyson’s state-of-the-art facilities in Singapore and Philippines.  The successful candidate will be joining a company with a strong engineering culture that provides the following unique benefits;

Core Responsibilities

The role is an opportunity to work alongside other technical senior leaders and significantly contribute to the creation of enabling technologies for a variety of next generation Dyson products and fulfil our ambition of being truly authentic, different, better and faster than the competition.

Successful candidate will report directly to the Motors and Power Systems Research Director and work with a multi-disciplinary, highly motivated and diverse team of engineers. Core responsibilities include:

  • Stretch the boundaries of speed, power density, efficiency and robustness / reliability in electric motor systems in a variety of applications

  • Meet target specifications such as cost (part and manufacturing), size, mass and performance within the planned timeline of each research project – ability to optimise these concurrently

  • Understand the overall product concept and contribute significantly to the design of the product with expert knowledge of the latest technologies / methods in the industry

  • Generate novel solutions with strong & high value IP

  • Identify skills / knowledge gaps within the team and support the recruitment activities as required

  • Coach and mentor junior team members

  • Support creation and delivery of associated technology roadmaps

  • Engage with and support various external research activities

About you

Ideally you will hold a Degree from a relevant engineering or scientific degree programme (2:1 or better) with a demonstrable level of industrial experience as well as expert knowledge of;

  • A broad range of bearing technologies

  • Rotordynamics

  • Range of rotor balancing techniques  

  • NVH

  • Thermals

  • Mount design

  • Materials Science

  • Wide range of multi-disciplinary 1D to 3D simulation techniques and software platforms

  • Lab-based measurement techniques for component and system level characterisation and validation

  • Strong working knowledge of Systems Engineering & Design for Manufacturing skills to deliver low cost, high volume, high performance and reliable engineering solutions

  • Robust understanding of the role of concept specifications, requirements capture, DFMEAs and DVP&R’s in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment

  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing techniques of parts (e.g. moulding, machining) and common issues with these as well as experience in automated assembly techniques

  • Appreciation of complying with national, European and Worldwide regulations and legislation
